Hello everyone,

I am working on a project for a college class. I would like to know how Russian-born people feel about American culture and behaviors when they first came to America. How did you feel about American television, shopping, sports, et cetera, holidays, and so on. How did American culture affect your feelings and behavior, if at all?
Anything that you are willing to share about culture and immigration would be most appreciated!

Thanks very much,
Kit

Are you doing a project on Russian culture or American culture in the eyes of an immigrant?

I am trying to incorporate both cultures into my project. I want to know how Russian immigrants view American culture (approval; disapproval; what behaviors they adopt), and also how Russian culture is maintained in America.

In order to get more or less accurate results, you will have to survey a large number of Russians from different age groups, educational backgrounds, locations, etc. A person's relationship with a new culture depends on all these factors.. Younger people, in genaral, are more accepting to a change, while an older person would find cultural assimilation to be more difficult. Also an immigrant's experiences in New York differ considerably from ones in rural Nebraska.

I moved to the States at 26, and I don't remember culture to be a problem. My main difficulties came from feelings of social isolation and loneliness. I also found American parties to be extremely boring.. Probably, in part because I did not know much language and could not communicate well with people around me..

The majority of the Russian-born people I know here in the US say everything about America is awful and terrible, they hate America ... and yet they don't want to go back to that ... hm, "wonderful" place.
