Can anyone tell me the cheapest method to ship my fiance's personal items from Ukraine to U.S.? Thanks, John

I would think perhaps Fed Ex , ground.
It will arrive here by boat probably in about a month but it is probably the cheapest way or maybe DHL but they seemed a little pricey to me.
I have not done this so i am not sure but its a start.
If i go to Kyrgyzstan in the late summer , I plan on buying some hand woven carpets for my wood floors.
Then will ship them by boat to California and perhaps pick them up in San Fran.
If it takes 6 weeks to get them here it is fine for me.

I asked this question to our resident diva (Jill) from Albaina
( at present). She said that regular postal was the cheapest way. I'm planning to bring alot of Tanya's stuff back in my empty suitcases. 70Kgs per person in 2 bags +1 small carry on.

I think you can exceed the 2 bag (70 kg each) limit if you pay the penalty. It might be worthwhile to just pay the excess baggage fee and have everything sent along with your baggage. As for me, I'm bringing my mom in July so we'll have extra baggage capability!

You have to check with the airline you fly with but Aero Flot had a $108 charge for extra weight. I sooner ship postal. Jill has said that she's done it w/o problems.

Yup, I've sent packages of stuff (books, clothes, etc) to the US from the central post office in Kiev--knock on wood, but not a single item was lost. Although, certainly not the fastest way to get it there...

When I went to Russia for my wife and son to return with me, you would be amazed how much you can carry back with you. Six 35 Kg suitcases + 3 carry on bags is a large amount of stuff (and they weren't even maxed out for weight). The best $20 I've ever spent I gave to a skycap at JFK!

More important is what to bring, not how to bring with you. Of course she is of the mentality we must bring this and that. People save jars and plastic bags, because they are sometimes difficult to find or pricey. For each thing, you (together) need decide if you must bring it from the FSU, or do you have the same in the US; will her clothes blend with her fashion sense a few months after arriving; Is her wardrobe consistent with the climate of her new home; etc.

A few sentimental books are nice, but there are plenty of places for her to get new ones to read. For me, the biggest and most difficult was packing Russian ceramics (ie. tea set, salad bowls) and shoes. It is difficult to get the correct ones of either in the US. Also, she should take a great supply of the 'vitamins', medicines (headache remedies, cold cures, woman's things, etc.), and other sundries that she is used to. These typically take little space/weight, and trust me, are worth the time and money spent at her local Anteka.
