Internet access in Russia.

Some hotels and apartments in Moscow offer "fast" Internet access. Is this the same as high-speed/broadband or is it simply a 56k dial-up modem?

All of the emails I receive from Russia contain "dialup.mari-el.ru" in the mail header. Is Mari-El.ru the only Internet provider in Russia?

If relations become serious between myself and a Russian woman I would send her a VOIP phone (Voice Over Internet Protocol) so that we could speak as often as we want for $20/month. A VOIP phone requires a high-speed Internet connection. How does somebody in Russia go about getting access to a high-speed Internet connection? Is it possible to pay for one by the hour? Is it possible to access such a connection in public places?

Alan, I don't know about all the Russian, but in my town in Belarus there are only two providers -- that's very very bad.

In vast majority of cases there is no high speed connection. Maybe only in Moscow, but very expensive. Half of the russian population still does not have a land phone, so what do you expect?

I can't speak about Moscow, but here in Minsk there is broadband cable internet available and some hotels and apartments have such facilities. Personally I pay about £30 a month for a 2Mb/s service.

No, there are lots of ISPs. All your correspondence may be originating in the Mari-El region or something like that.

Same way you do in the west. Talk to the telecom company about ADSL services and the cable TV company about cable modems.

Most of the Internet cafe's here in Minsk are on broadband. It would surprise me if Moscow were more 'backward' than Minsk.

loulou - "...in my town in Belarus there are only two providers..."

Do those providers only offer dial-up or do they offer high-speed? What about Internet cafes in Belarus? Do they have high-speed?

inlove - "Half of the russian population still does not have a land phone, so what do you expect?"

Making VOIP calls to and from Russia is the easy part. The difficult part will be trying to explain what a VOIP phone is, and how it works, to somebody in Russian.

An ideal situation would be if the owner of an Internet cafe would allow somebody to use a VOIP phone on his network. The VOIP phone will work in any location with access to a high-speed Internet connection.

I got this idea from a friend. He lives and works in the US but his parents live in South Korea. He bought a VOIP phone, programmed it with the same area code as his own phone, and shipped it to his parents. He talks to his parents as often as he wants for $20/month. All the calls are routed over the Internet so they bypass the phone companies. It is also possible to get a video phone so you can see the person you're talking to. The video is full-motion, not still images.
