There are (or were) Russians at Caltech, but its mostly men. I have known Caltech students, and especially the Russians, to have mafia connections. And there's already too many men and too few women on campus. So be careful.

Also, those women are probably not so desperate for passports.

When I lived in LA I went to a few Cal Tech Russian parties. In fact, we met one of my husband's good friends there. I don't think we ever met any mafia types but then again I wasn't asking. I don't recall there being many good looking women at those parties.

Try Russian LA forums if you speak Russian, or a more general Russian forum which should have plenty of people from LA on it.

Well, Vyesna, not every bandit is a mean-looking, unshaven brute with a scratched-up face, eye patch and bulky figure. A lot of mafiosos and bandits look quite innocent. After all, did Molotov or Ribbentrop look anything but like regular elegant old gents ?

You wouldn't know that somebody has Russian mafia connections unless they told you. Some did tell me. They may not be mafia anymore though. Now they might just be "capitalists".

I said I don't think we ever MET any mafia types-- that is, from what you could tell by what they talk about or what sort of "business" they are into. All the people we met there were students or post-grads. Which doesn't exclude mafia but makes it a lot less likely. I wasn't talking about looks. Read more carefully before you assume that I'm assuming something.

Anyway, by mafia I didn't mean bandits. There are two chief reasons for the Caltech-Mafia connection:

(1) Manufacture of narcotics, i.e., chemical engineering
(2) Extreme "master-mind" genius combined by education in economics, political science, law, etc., etc., which is useful for all types of business operation, legitimate or otherwise.

How do you think some Russian kid can afford $100,000 (or even $10,000) to go to college in America?

Anyway, I just wanted to point out where I know there are some Russians, but also why its not the best place to look. Better to go to Russia to meet Russians, in my opinion.

I've met a lot of Russians in the U.S. and only some of our artist-musician acquaintances I've found to be...er..."not orderly" people, but even among them none were criminal as far as I know, well, except one guy who pulled off some petty cons. All the rest I've met have been pretty ordinary hard-working people.
