Syringes delivered to UK embassy in Moscow

LONDON (Reuters) - Syringes have been sent to Britain's embassy in Moscow in a package that was intercepted by security staff, the Foreign Office says.
Police are examining the syringes and the Foreign Office is taking the matter seriously, said a spokeswoman on Friday. She declined to comment on the possible content of the syringes.
"Our embassy in Moscow received several packets. There were four packets and only one of them contained syringes that were revealed by security checks," said the spokeswoman in London.
The other three packages contained papers, she said, adding this was the first incident of its kind at the Moscow embassy in recent memory. A spokesman for the embassy in Moscow said staff had not been in danger.
"There was no emergency situation. We have a very good mail monitoring system," he said, adding that the envelopes had been addressed to a former ambassador.
Several embassies of the United States and other countries have been forced to close temporarily over past months after receiving envelopes containing white powder, raising fears about the potentially deadly anthrax bacteria.
Britain has stepped up security measures at many of its embassies around the globe to protect against potential terrorist attacks.
