marrying a russian man

I am very new here so I am not sure how this whole thing works. I have been communicating with a Russian man since OCT2004 and we are planning on him coming here in the next couple of months. He has been here to Washington D.C. before for work but has since changed jobs to earn more money for the trip here to meet. I don't know what would be the best visa for him to come here on or what is the best plan of action for this. I feel kinda frustrated because it all seems to be info required on his end and so far there is nothing that I can do to speed up the process. I have read a few of your notes on here and so far think that you have very good advice to give. Also, after the 1st initial meeting how long does it take for a person to get a fiance visa? Thanks for any and all help!

Business visa is probably best if he can get it.

First, do not send money to someone you have never even met who wants help to visit you in the U.S.

Second, your only visa option here is a B-2 (tourist) visa. They are difficult to get for Russians but since he's been here before you have a chance.

(US Embassy in Moscow explains the whole process, has downloadable forms on their website, etc.)

http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1262.html
(US Department of State has the same info in a slightly different format)

Third, the advice most people will tell you is it's usually easiest and best to visit your significant other for the first time in Russia than try to get a visa here. You will have to get a visa, which is practically automatic to Americans.

The fiance visa will normally take anywhere from 6-10 months from first filing to arrival here in the U.S. For a walkthrough see http://www.russianmeetingplace.com/...s=&threadid=642

Wait...I think Kalexandra is from Minnesota, no? She is married to a Russian man--perhaps she could tell you about the time your local service center needs to process a K-1, etc. Just a thought.

Naw Andrei, it's because he lives in New Jersey! (Just kidding! I'm an ex-New Yorker!)

You have an amazing memory Jill, I am from Minnesota

Cheetahbum-- My husband came here on a K-3 visa (we were married in Russia and living there) So, the application wasn't sent to the local center in Bloomington like a K-1 would be. Our whole process took about 8 months. Let me know what else you are trying to figure out and I will be glad to try and help!
