Is valentines day celebrated in Russia ? Here in Denmark it has started slowly 10-15 years ago, but are still not big, but seen as an american "marketing" holiday to sell flowers and all things heartshaped.

It's not a "traditional" holiday in Russia, but it has been gaining popularity in the last few years. It's fairly well known and celebrated now.

Does anyone have any ideas on what type of Valentine's gift I should my 23 year old fiancee? I am a bit undecided.

Theres no hard and fast rules.
Whether its a small gift or something spectacular is a matter of finances.
Some women will say what they would like, others prefere the suprise.
In addition to flowers here in the UK valentines gifts include Chocolates Perfume Jewellery (one of or all of )
Some people spend the money instead on a Romantic night out/hotel
or doing the things they did when they first met.

At the end of the day its not the actual gift but the spirit and love in which its given thats important whether $1 or $100

It is not as popular as March 8th,women's day,but like Jill said it's fairly well known and celebrated now.

It is the thought that counts, unless she is materialistic.
I sent my friend a card and two stuffed bears that are in the kissing postion, and when you touch it it makes smooching sounds.
She has already recieved it and just loves it.

my wife has sent her friends E Valentine cards I said I thought Valentines cards were just for partners/wives.
Apparantly not..........I suspect like everyother celebration in Russia no one likes to miss out on anything !!

Randy.... we have a couple of singing toys (a Furry chicken from new year 2004 that sings snovim godam ) and a singing puppy dog that sings happy Birthday given to us this year.
Both in Russian

Great party pieces to get out when people come to visit us at home !!

Lena certainly enjoys receiving flowers and gifts on Valentine's Day

Lena and I were just speaking with a Russian young lady friend of Lena's today, and she said that her mother (who is in Russia) sent her an email card wishing her a Happy Valentine's Day.

So, my impression is that Russians certainly are celebrating Valentine's Day.

I've yet to meet a Russian who didn't enjoy any excuse for a celebration.

"Hmmm... Another holiday? Bring it on!..."

And on the 15th they will start to plan the Womans day celebrations .....

Well hola....took me a minute or several this morning to realize that my lady friend sent me a Valentine's e-card (mostly because I am not used to seeing her actual email address as opposed to her name).

Hella surprise I'll give it that (totally didn't dawn on my it was Valentine's until I heard it on the radio when I started my car this morning.... )

Anyways...looked like a good excuse to phone her up and thank her

Several designer "undies" (one was the Texas flag-big hit!)

a Russian/English Dictionary (requested)

A very long letter in Russian from an online translator

A $1,000,000 USD bill (like you can buy at the fair or gunshows)-hit!

A new webcam - double hit

More computer RAM----home run!

Geeks are so easy to shop for.

It really wasn't expensive because I can buy parts wholesale.

This was fun, we need more holidays for giving.
