Went through the 205 minute Criterion Collection release of Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev" yesterday, and I can honestly say that it has been a while since a movie has impressed me that much and made me think about the larger issues in this life. Many people will claim that it is one of those inaccessible movies that is hard to understand, but with a little effort it will give you a great reward.

Although the movie is not completely true to all that happened during Rublev's life (1370-1430), it draws the larger contours of Russian history during the period of this famous Russian icon painter. And what makes the movie really interesting is the way Tarkovsky interprets Rublev's life and struggles when searching for a meaning in life.

Being somewhat of a filmbuff myself, I also really appreciate all the technical beauty of Tarkovsky's shots and camera tracking. You will also witness some amazing scenes with hundreds of extras in perfect symphony in this film. Just stunning! Some of the sets are just larger than life (I cannot even imagine how he got the funds to make this epic during 60's Soviet).

I had only seen "Solaris" by Tarkovsky before this film, and I must say that after this I am in awe of this director. It is really a shame that he died at the young age of 54 (cancer).

Well, the next Russian film on my schedule is "A driver for Vera", screened on Russian cinemas last year. Looking forward to see it :-)

Hope you will have an interesting movie experience in the near future,

Yes, excellent movie. It's been years since I've seen it, though...

As for "A Driver for Vera"--I saw it a few months ago. Not a bad film, but I still can't get used to those somber Russian endings. I like more resolution
