All profiles and 1st few posts should be vetted

Posted by: lester

Agreed,
I have reported to moderators a few who give links to xxxxxxx, with obvious "adult" sites.

oops!, nearly typed members then

Hi guys,

You raise an interesting point and I will post this thread in the moderators' forum for further discussion and resolution.

Happy new years to y'all!

I think this may sway a decision:

Under section 1 of the Malicious Communications Act 1998 it is an offence to send an indecent, offensive or threatening letter, electronic communication or other article to another person.

Offences are punishable with up to six months imprisonment and/or a fine.

Do you know that owners of a forum can be also held accountable
in some circumstances.

its probably better to be a vetter.

oh and ive edited the post as I have just found this also

If the offensive or threatening letter, electronic communication or other article is racialist in nature or motivated by religious hostility then charges could be brought contrary to sections 32(1)(a) or 32(1)(b) of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 . In serious cases offenders could face up to 7 years imprisonment.

I think that the Malicious Communications Act would only be applicable to email and private messages, not with general posting in a forum. If you don't like what you read, change the channel.

Vetting new posters to the forum will only make for a closed group of people. If you wish to talk among yourselves, a moderated email list is a better venue.

The catch 22 of the thing is the forum was created to allow all people to express their opinions and thoughts. If you only want to hear those blowing warm smoke up your popa, join a self help group. I know of several people, whom have much experience and wisdom, who will not even read this forum because many times it has a very naive, politically correct, group hug philosophy. This makes those who are willing to put the strong counterpoint out there contrast sharply to the "everything will be wonderful!" posts. Removing this contrast will only make this forum an echo of the marketing tripe you can find on most agency web sites.

Yes, the items that are contrary to this sites policies (links, sexually explicit items, shilling and marketing, direct insults and flaming) should be moderated. Although a forum that's international in flavor, it is American based. The Bill of Rights and freedom of speech has served the US for over 200 years. Our host, a man who earns his livelihood because he has the freedom to create literary works, should see the value of maintaining this goal.

I agree with that

Although I would point out, this forum is the only one that has the opposite viewpoint of American-Russian relationships-- AW-RM relationships, which tend to arise in a different manner and offer insights on Russia that none of the forums that are primarily AM discussing RW offer. It's also frequented by Americans/Westerners who speak good Russian (unlike most of the others), read Russian forums and have lived in Russia and therefore are more in touch with Russian culture and lifestyle since so much of it is only accessible in the Russian language.

I don't mean to speak for Leprechaun, but I do know what he is referring to. He is certainly NOT talking about turning the forum into an elite club where dissenting opinions are not tolerated. Nor is he trying to infringe on freedom of speech. He is referring to specific, inappropriate content that sometimes doesn't hit the radar screen of the moderators and larger forum (such as new profiles), and in at least one instance, a PM he received from a new member (hence the Malicious Communications act).

The content both he and lester are referring to (including links to porn site), is generally edited anyway. I think they are simply looking for a way that this can become more systematic so that such posts are caught and dealt with early on in a proper manner. They are not talking about changing the forum guidelines, just the manner in which they are upheld.

So freedom of speech and desire for diversity are not under threat here

Thank you jill,
I have sent Connor a pm, inviting him to view the
profile that is referred to here.

There is no issue on free speech, purely a system of trying to keep decency, on the forum.

Cheers Jill, I also sent Connor a PM explaining the full situation of this PM.

So please anyone else that wishes to post that time honoured freedom of speech speech dont bother its got nothing to do with what im talking about.

Now lets all get into a circle and give each other a great big hug.

Hi Everyone,

I have not been able to access my russianmeetingplace email for a couple of weeks because I had a hard drive fail on my main computer, and I just configured a laptop so that I can check my email that way.

I just downloaded all of my emails from the past couple of weeks, and I will check the reported posts......

As far as freedom of speech goes.... I wanted to structure this forum so that it would be a place where I would enjoy visiting and writing. And so, yes, we have a policy where there is free speech, but also a responsibility to be respectful to others in the forum as well. I don't want our forum to be a place where people are flaming one another, and where people feel uncomfortable to post. It is more comfortable to have some basic guidelines for etiquette, rather than people bashing one another. This is the kind of form that I want to create and maintain.

I am going to check all of the emails that I received about reported posts....

I read the PM of the member that Lep was referring to, and since I found his profile and PM very inappropriate, I deleted the profile.
