Russian DVD`s

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I know someone asked this before but i cant find the old thread about it
My Fiancee brought over some Russian DVD`s and i did not think they would work in my DVD player and I was right.
Is there any way to get them to work in a standard DVD player?
Any suggestions would be helpful , thanks
Jerry

Question is, HOW did they not work? Did your DVD player refuse to play them because they were from the wrong region code? Or did things on your screen look all out of sync? There are ways around both of these problems. More info please...

Heh , sorry ,should of givin more info.
The DVD player screen says disc error and on the tv screen it says not NTSC , dont really no what it means.
Maybe this helps a little bit.
Its not the end of the world if I cant get them to work for her but when all else fails , try asking others with possible same problems.
Thanks again
Jerry

They will probably work on a computer with a DVD player. If they are Region 5 DVDs then you can just make the computer into your Region 5 DVD player and play Region 1 DVDs on the TV.

Long term, here is the way that I suggest you solve this problem. Go to Google and search for "multisystem TV". This will identify shops in cities like Chicago, New York and LA where you can buy TV and video equipment that plays both PAL and NTSC video.

The reason that I reccomend this is that PAL/SECAM video is higher quality than the American NTSC. Instead of reducing the quality to make it viewable on an NTSC TV set, I think it is better to get a higher quality device.

If you buy a multisystem TV, you can still hook up your old VCR and DVD player to watch all your old stuff. But you can also hook up a multisystem VCR that plays PAL/SECAM VHS tapes and a multisystem DVD player that plays PAL DVDs. Computer screens are already higher quality display devices so they have no problems with the PAL DVDs.

or is the quality so bad that they wont work in any system.
or are they legit
(only 10% of Russian dvds are)
(but the man in the shop said)

Remember Kids piracy is bad, it takes money away from millionaire actors, directors & billionaire companies
and its bad like drugs & war & murder & all things bad like.

For watching DVD, you only need a multisystem DVD player, not the TV (you only need the multisystem TV to watch PAL video tape).

Both Norcent and Apex make nice, inexpensive (<$50 USD) DVD players that will play PAL DVDs on your NTSC television. And there are codes to "unlock" them, and make them region free.

Jerico,

As a DVD player you should buy a multisystem capable one. NTSC (National Television Systems Comitee) is the us standard, Pal(Phase Alternating Line) and SECAM (Sequential Couleur Avec Memoire) are the european and African/Asian ones.
Dependant on your DVD player (changing the System (to NTSC (US standard)) or not, you would need a different TV set.
If your TV IS multisystem you do not have to care. (You have to check)
If you have a plain NTSC TV set, then you have to be sure that your player is not only multisystem, but also transforming the PAL/SECAM signal into NTSC. Otherwise you would encounter the same problem (not being able to watch the DVD on your TV) ...

Many newer multisystem DVD player DO do the conversion to allow PAL DVDs to be played on a NTSC television (as the processing is done by the DVD player's uProcessor). You should, of course, check the manufacturer's website for technical details (as well as many technical discussion web sites) before you buy.

As I stated earlier, Norcent and Apex make nice, inexpensive DVD players that will do the job for about $50.

Conner,

I guess most Americans don't notice it because they are so used to the crappy quality of NTSC pictures, but PAL is not just some technical gobbledygook, it is a method of encoding TV pictures that records MORE information and produces a higher quality image. If you play a PAL DVD on a PAL DVD player (or a multisystem DVD player that outputs a PAL signal) and then watch that DVD on a PAL TV set, or a multisystem TV set with PAL inputs, then you get a much better picture.

This makes a REAL difference when watching films which were intended for the big screen and therefore don't have as many close shots as American "made for TV" movies. When to downgrade PAL to NTSC you are losing image quality.

Fortunately, computers display video in a completely different way that is standard worldwide. Therefore all DVDs, PAL and NTSC, will display on a computer at their full level of quality because all computers nowadays can display higher quality images than TVs.

Yes, you can by cheap DVD players, cheap clothes, cheap cars and cheap food. But you do get what you pay for....

Well, let's not get into whether Americans lack a cultured taste for television video, as we have been missing some lines of vertical resolution on our television screens as we watch "American Idol" and "Cops".

Back to the original question (paraphrased) -- How can I watch a few PAL DVDs without spending much money for an entirely new high end audio/video system. Answers -- 1. Watch on your computer (not typically useful to snuggle on the couch with your gf); or 2. Buy an inexpensive multisystem DVD, hook it to your existing TV/HTS (and pop some popcorn, and get close to that woman you love).

Hmmm.... Spending several hundred dollars for a new TV doesn't seem to be an option for most people...

Thanks for the info guys,
I think I like conners thinking on this though.
Buy a cheap dvd player and snuggle
I tried them on my computer also but still received error message but I will mess around with it some more.
I am just trying to keep my woman happy

Buying an expensive tv will not work for me.
I am to busy buying nice clothing for my fiancee at the moment
and showing her California as best I can.
She still has bad jet lag though but soon should adjust.
Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it a lot.

A few months ago, I bought a DVD Player for $80 from a local Ruski store in West Hollywood that plays Ruski DVD's (PAL).

You can now get it at Target for just $38.75. It's called CyberHome and it's made in China.

Dosvidanja!!!

You can convert DVDs into VCD's that should play on your dvd so they can be watched on nice big TV but you have better things to be doing rather than learning how to use and where to get the software and all this tech jargon has my head spinning too!!!

as a matter of interest what are the films and were they recommendable?
