The Ukrainian sitution - problem & solution?

Hi

First I want to say, that this situation where about 1/3 of population is pro-russian or actually russian its not a unique situation. Its the same in the 3 Baltic states, where it has also created major problems.
I can understand its something the same in Kazakstan, where an additional issue is there, where the Russian are Christian and the rest are Moslem, even very moderate, and sofare with no major conflicts.
In Moldova is there a conflict between the Moldovians, who a pro-Romanian and the rest who is pro-Russian/Ukrainian and has actually their own autonoumus Republic and want independece.

And if we go outside FSU, its something like this in Bosnia and Cosova.

The solution?
My quick though would be to create a union. A constitution for all Ukraine and then 2-> 4 members with strong self-government.

The real, long-term solutions to these problems is to recreate the Soviet Union in a new form, more like the EU than like the old centrally ruled USSR. This is what the CIS (SNG) could evolve into if people had the right vision.

This is what the EU is. A union of diverse people's with different cultures and languages who have managed to find a way to live together in cooperation. We need harmony in diversity. Each "nation" needs to make space for all the other nations and stop identiftying itself as "not like them". The Russian Federation itself is a lot like this already. We should encourage them to find greater unity instead of attempting to destabilize the entire region.

For what it's worth (admittedly not much), here are the results of a cnn poll:

Quote:
What is the best solution to the crisis facing Ukraine?

A split country 52%

Political reconciliation 29%

International mediation 19%

Personally, I do not think the country will split. But I guess we'll find out on December 5

who did they ask?

It's on their website (cnn.com). So it's open to everyone--not only Ukrainians. Which is why I question it's real value--you have no way of knowing who responded and what the basis for their response was.

Splitting Ukraine won't really solve any problems. Look at Ireland. It is split into the Republic of Ireland, and EU member, and Northern Ireland, part of the UK which is another EU member.

European counties have learned that independence is illusory. A country depends on its neighbours and needs to have good relations with them.

So I maintain that freedom for Ukraine is simply an impossible and irrational dream. Either the whole country will be part of a Russian-centered union or it will be part of the EU. Or it will split into an EU part and a Russian part. That would be better for the EU than swallowing the whole beast.

The EU could use the agricultural land west of the Dnepr and a natural border with Russia would be handy. On the other hand, increasing the number of Russian speaking citizens of the EU just serves to bring the EU closer and closer to Russia's economic orbit.
