I was reading his thread about the good day he had recently and I thought to myself how nice and refreshing it is to read a positive story about a happy couple/family.

Sometimes when reading the forum, it can seem like all these Western-FSU relationships are nothing but challenges, from sneaky scammers to surly immigration officials.

It's nice to be reminded sometimes of why we subject ourselves to all of these challenges--because there are the good days" that make up for the frustrations, because it's worth it in the end.

So I have started this thread.

Tell us a good story, a happy memory, or a cherished dream that you and your FSU girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse have shared together or will soon share together. Share your success!

cmon we have a true love story (para and me). I found my love shes russian Im western we live together, we wil marry asap. Hihi. maybe we´re not the most normal couple, but we definitely love each other to bits

Thanks, Jill, for the nice comments. The charter members of this forum will tell you that used to be the tone of most of the threads here. I believe that the forum was born with the intent not to be like some of those other forums out there. I'm not sure that is entirely possible.

If you ask some of the longtime members (many whom we haven't heard from in a while), I'm sure many would tell you I was one of the troublemakers here (they were right, in contrast to those who were posting). Now, I think I'm more the moderate voice of reason...

I'll keep on posting news worthy human interest stories as they develop.

Merry Christmas Fishrman and huge congratulations!!!

A funny story!?! Or maybe you just had to be there?

Sitting next to a babushka in a Russian McDonalds and watching her trying to figure out how to eat a Big Mac. She told us it was her first one with a smile.
First she flips the sandwich over and looks at it long and hard. Then takes off the bottom bun and patty and begins to eat the sandwich Russian style. Then the same to the top but a real confused look when it came to the middle!
The kicker was when I spoke American English to her and she darn near fell out of her seat.
My lady and I had a good laugh about that one.

Now that's a scary thought

It's so nice to see some happy stories here for a change!

My happy news for the weekend is that we are FINALLY getting a water tank in our apartment so hopefully we will soon have water round the clock (currently we only have water for about 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening). So we are very excited about this! Now if only they would turn on the heat...

Also, my husband and I recently had our anniversary. My husband was amazingly thoughtful--I knew there was a reason I married him He made a wonderful dinner with all my favorite foods, bought a chocolate cinnamon cake, a HUGE bouquet of red, pink, and white roses, and rented one of those silly movies that I like but which he usually refuses to watch with me

Ah, another year...

Wow , sometimes you forget how many things we take for granted in the US

Nice story Jill

Looks like your husband covered all the bases
ie: dinner,cake,flowers and a movie

Sounds like you had a good anniversary Jill. Hopefully many more are in store for you two!

I'll be with Tanya on the 24th when we have a celebration for the 1 year since we first started writing. Hey, it's not an anniversity of a marriage but it's a start..

Three months!?!? That's wonderful!!! Will you stay in Novosibirsk the whole time, or do you plan on some travel? Will this be your first Russian New Year?

Trust me, it's an anniversary. My wife considers it one, along with our wedding anniversary, the day she arrived in America, the day I went to her to bring her to America....

After all, she is Russian. And I've yet to meet a Russian who didn't use any excuse to celebrate a holiday.

Jill:

Yes, this will be my first New Year in Russia. Looking forward to the celebration. Will try to take lots of pictures for the photo galleries (been wanting to see the ice village and tree at Lenin Square).

I will be doing some travelling while Lilya works. She's a stewardess on the Trans-Siberian Railroad and is trying to arrange for me to travel with her on one of her trips. I'd at least like to make a trip to Omsk to see some of the older architecture - maybe have a chance to meet Andrei in the flesh.

This will be my third trip to Novosibirsk, and if all goes well on this trip, I am planning on relocating to Novosibirsk in about two years (need to take care of financial obligations in US first).

By the way - Happy anniversary! Glad you had a wonderful day!

This time of year it would be rather cold for him to do that, and a bit scary to even think about!

despite the failed relationship, almost every minute I spent on my three trips to Ukraine was extremely enjoyable...of course it would be expected to be nothing but because it was a holiday for me....

a favorite memory was midnight on Jan 1st, writing a wish for the new year on a piece of paper, lighting it, dropping it into the champagne and then drinking the champagne...the fireworks coming from every rooftop and alleyway that lasted for hours...eating like a king and dancing til sun up....I guess that's more than one, but nonetheless I am thankful to God for having the memories and the safe journey.

PS Good thread Idea Jill

Fantastic! Have you been on the trains before? I once took the Trans-Siberian from Moscow to Irkutsk (from there we took a camping trip to Lake Baikal and then visited the Buddhist datsans--and big Lenin head--of Ulan Ude) and it was just amazing. But I bet any such travel would be damn cold in December

Interesting. Would you be working there, or are you planning a retirement? Also, there was a discussion here recently about Americans getting dual American/Russian citizenship. Are you considering that option?

Yes, New Year is a lot of fun in Russia/Ukraine. It has become one of my favorite holidays (after women's day, of course ). They really celebrate it like no one else!

Pin Boy, what's going on with you these days? I seem to recall you asking Khashyar about the RMP personals. Have you made contact with anyone?

Posted by: Pin Boy

hey andrei, i was going to ask you if that's your team that Jagr signed with...have you seen him play yet? give us the scoop>

it totally amazes me a guy in siberia knows about ODB...I remember he stole a pair of sneakers from a store in Virginia when I lived there about 6 years ago....I read it in the paper and laughed my a-- off...these rap guys kill me..by the way...I could never get into that 36 Chambers CD...just waaaaayyy too many F words for me...but yes, let him rest in peace...hopefully someone will take care of his 13 children!!!!

I'm a little more partial to NWA, Run DMC, The D.O.C. and the Eric B and Rakim...oh and of course Public Enemy

Pin Boy you kick it old school!

I will agree with NWA--"Strait outta Compton" was one of the best albums of the 1980s (that was the '80s, right? ).

I have not yet travelled by train in Russia, though I have in the Phillipines, Korea and Japan. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Russia because I've spent most of my time in Novosibirsk and surrounding areas. I know it'll be cold - but I'm prepared for it (I hope).

Lilya and I have discussed the pros and cons of her relocating to the US and we've decided that my relocating to Russia is a better option for both of us. Currently I am retired from the University of California so will have an income, but I'd like to return to the workforce. I have been offered employment at Academgorodok and will be looking into other opportunities as well. I will be investigating the dual citizenship option also.

Jill,

Yes, S.O.C. was I believe 1989 or 90 at the latest and the first 15/20 minutes of that disc just blow me away...Glad you admire it as well. I never fail to get pumped up by it and MUST play it loudly!

To answer your question about what's new relationship wise...I have not made any contact via the RMP...have a slow dial up that sometimes tests my patience...but just the other day I heard from my teacher friend in Ukraine that a great girl I met there on my first trip is unattached at the moment and I inquired to see if she is interested in communicating presently, so that may be a possibility....I do regret (in 20/20 hindsight of course) choosing to pursue a different girl I had met and spent time with instead of Inna so who knows what twists and turns the fickle finger of fate may have in store...but I appreciate the interest and I'll let you know what happens.

Pin Boy (a.k.a. Eazy Motherf_ _ _ _ n' E)

To Andrei---Jagr sure is a faaaaarrr way from Pittsburgh...how's he going to get those great Primanti (or whatever the correct name is) Italian sandwiches in Omsk?? Any good Italian delis in town?

off topic for sure but: Andrei,
when I heard ODB had died, I called my son (who is 24 yrs old and lives in another city) to tell him. His roommates thought it was quite funny that his MOM called him to tell him ODB was dead
but ODB and Wu Tang are all from my home, so I followed their careers.

Posted by: Jerico

Who the f*** is ODB?

Everybody these days has some Abbreviation for everything
i am assuming he is some dead rap singer.
Am i right?
Jerry

Posted by: Jill

Why, Jerico, where have you been? That's Ol' Dirty Bastard! He was the Wu Tang Clan's most misunderstood genius

I'm all the way out in the middle of the Caucasus and even I know that one!

(Just kidding, I only know because I saw the news blurb on cnn.com )

May he rest in peace.

Posted by: andrei

Dont be too surprised that Im familiar with the Wu-Tang. Here in Russia East Coast hip hop is much more appreciated than Cali hip hop because NYC sound is rougher. Wu-Tang Clan is my favourite group and Im even planning to make a tattoo with their emblem (designed by their DJ Mathematics 12 years ago).

Me and my friends are gonna spend this Saturday's night drinking vodka and listening to the "Return To The 36 Chambers" CD. We all knew he would die soon, cuz we heard his heart was so badly exhausted he couldn't even perform on his feet, he had to sit on a chair during performance. Cocaine and alcohol killed the Flamboyant.

Posted by: Pin Boy

sounds like a good way to spend a Saturday night! How bout the Geto Boys from the late 80's early 90's...Know that band Jill or Andrei? They had a midget lead rapper named Bushwick Bill...they were from Houston I believe...his GF shot him in the eye (he survived) and they used a picture of him being carried into the hospital on a stretcher for their next album cover!!! Classic! But if I remember correctly, he too is now dead...all of the great ones die too young!

Speaking of rap music world absurdity, did you see or read about the fight breaking out in the middle of the VIBE magazine music awards while Snoop Dog and Quicny Jones were on stage??? Chairs and fists flying, one person stabbed! Dr. Dre right in the middle of it.Now the police are looking for some rapper named Young Buck. They think he had the knife. INSANE!!!!

Thanks Jill for letting me know who he is or was.
I have to admit i hate that crap , especially when i see some young guy wearing his pants hanging from his ass.
i want to pull over and slap them silly
Thats not cool OK
Hopefully that does not take in Russia at least for a while.
they dont need it.

Pinboy,
are you surprised about the fighting at a hip hop award show ?

I did not watch it , of course because i hate that crap but I am not shocked about it at all.
Look at the type of audience they seek?
That says it all.

Maybe I am just getting old.

Can't say about Russia (perhaps Andrei can enlighten us), but it certainly has in Ukraine, at least in Kiev. And you know what the big thing among these kids is? Breakdancing! Every weekend they lay out a cardboard mat (usually in front of the McDonalds on Khreshatyk) and there they go in their baggy ghetto pants spinning on their heads. And they even have teeny bopper girl groupies! I have to admit though, over the past few years they have gotten pretty good. I remember the first few times I saw them--it was just pathetic. But now, they really aren't half bad. And it's funny to see the mix of people watching them--besides their teenage female admirers, there are actually quite a few middle aged and older people enjoying the show.
