Question about calling from US to Ukr

Ive tried 2 different calling card plans. Buying time to call from Ohio to Odessa isnt a problem. The problem is connecting with her.... It seems like a lot of static, dropped connections or just not getting through at all. Is this common? She has a cell phone...... Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

RobOhio,

mobile termination to Ukraine mobile networks from American calling card providers often do not work because they use cheap black routes. If you have a chance to find 3311 calling cards, they work pretty well. I don't know if they are available in your state though. Try calling through Primus or the best would be AT&T or Sprint. They all have agreements with Ukrtelecom or Utel. If you can find Teleglobe preselection, they work as well.

I have tried four diffrent calling cards. I have had the best success with a calling card from IDphonecard.com. It has static and dropped calls but I can connect. I can hear her better than she can hear me. I call Sevastopol. I have better luck with her residential phone than her cell phone. I tried ATT thinking that for .35 a minute it would be better, but it was not. I am paying .17 to call regular and .20 for cell.

I pay less than that, including local sales tax, by using a local IP telephone provider (Which I use for all my cheap landline phone calls).

Try looking for providers using SIP - And buy an adapter like the Sipura 2000. Might get cheaper in the long run. I can see sipphone.com is slightly more expensive than my local provider at 15/16 cents to Ukraine. But there are many providers.

Denmark has around 10 providers, and only 5 mio citizens.

I have friends in Ukraine (Kiev) and I call all the time. http://www.cheap-international-calling-card.com
very good rates and quality

I've used several different calling plans over the last year from Texas to Chernigov, Ukraine to a home phone. Cost has been between 4.7 cents to 11.5 cents. I think I am most satisfied with http://www.fastphonecard.com
They have many to choose from, I generally buy the "Terminator" cards.

You can access through an 800 number for 2 cents extra or find a local access number and call for 4.7 cents.(2 cents more I think to cell phone) The local numbers are long distance for me so I use my cell with free long distance and free nights and weekends to place the calls.

The time of day in Ukraine is also important for quality of calls. Between 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm UA time is not a good time to call (for me anyway). I get the best connections from 7 am to 12 noon, or from 10 pm to 12 pm

Read the fine print. Some cards have 3 min. billing and maintence fees.

Anyone ever try something like Skype phones? Free PC to PC calls for Skype users. Or Yahoo Instant Messenger which had free PC to PC calls.

If the other end has no PC, then this is difficult.

But I have a SIP adapter (Sipura 2000) and has set the 2nd line up to www.sipdiscount.com. This means my wife just uses a normal phone to call any number anywhere in the world. The 1st line is with a local provider, who gives me a real phone number for incoming calls for $1.50/month

The prices:
Denmark: Free (we live here)
Germany: Free (she has friends there)
New Zeeland: 1 eurocent/min (she has friend there)
Russia: 1 eurocent/min (her family is there).

Ukraine is more expensive with 9 cents/min but we do not call there.
