Hi everyone!!

Sorry for not writing much lately, but I have been very busy and I have went to Belarus and have returned home with Nadya! I left on the 18th of October and we returned on the 26th. We are getting married on November 19th. Overall, everything was pretty uneventful as far as the interview and bringing her into the country. We had a wonderful evening of celebration with her friends and family. All tolled, we had 10 pieces of luggage!!
I was told by the customs agent in Chicago to get married ASAP to get the Social Security Number and also to request an emergency leave for her just in case we have to return unexpectedly. Has this been told to anyone else here?
Hope all is well with everyone!

-Kevin

First, congratulations to you and Nadya! Best wishes to you both, and take time to enjoy each other and help with (both of your) orientation to your new life together.

Second, the Customs guy is wrong. Nadya may apply for her SS# anytime her K-1 is valid, which is either from yhe time she enters the US until 90 days from her entry, or until she gets married, whichever comes first. Once she marries, she is technically without legal status until she files her AOS, and then can not receive a SS# until she either receives 1) her conditional alien resident card or 2) her EAD (Employment Authorization Card).

So, after your nuptials, send in her AOS application, as well as her AP and EAD applications. Even if she isn't planning to work, she will receive her EAD card within 90 days (or can get a temporary one). It will be the only document that official shows her legal immigration status in the US. It may become useful. Natalya needed hers in order to apply for her driver's learner's permit.
