Favourite Russian Films

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK, read this carefully.

Think of your 10 favourite Russian films, but don't tell us what they are. We don't want to read lists of titles. Instead, pick one of them and tell us why that film is one of your picks. Tell us a bit about the film and what it teaches you about the Russian language and/or culture.

One film per posting please.

Darn you, wavetossed! I was all ready with my ten and now you limit me to one!

OK, I'll go with Ivan Vasilievich menyaet professiyu. Do I really need to explain why? It is one of the funniest movies ever made and has so many good quotes useful in my everyday life

Ya trebuyu prodolzheniya banketa......Menya opyat terzayut smutnye somneniya....etc.

And did I mention that it's funny?

Posted by: parasionok

My absolutely favourite is Zdravstvujte, ja Vasha tiotia.

It teaches you nothing about Russia or Russian culture (it's a film version of Charlie's Aunt by Brandon Thomas... But Kaliagin who plays Charlies Aunt is superb and I use lots of quotes from this film as well

Jill,

my favourite quotes from Ivan Vasiljevich are Jesli by vy byli mojej zhenoj, to ja by povesilsia, Lepota, and of course I tebia vylechat, i tebia vylechat, i menia vylechat

Parasionok,

Your quotes really made me laugh--that's a great film!

Brat. The best Russian made movie since 1991. It created a cult following in Russia. We changed and became togher and more ready for the new unkind Russia. Great national film. Best part is in the club when Danila speaks to the French man. He says "skoro vsei vashei amerike kirdik" famous quote. I also like the movie because Bodrov is a great actor. Its about a guy who just demobilized from the army and comes back to his town. Life is not going well there so his mother tells him to see his older brother in St. Petersburg. As he arrives he realizes that his brother became a successful man because he works as a hitman. I like a lot of ohter movies if anybody is interested i will give a description.

Posted by: Jill

Yes, Brat is an excellent movie, but personally I preferred Brat 2--very funny at times and great music

Poor Sergei Bodrov

I like Syostry much better. Brat 2 was too nationalistic for my taste, and I think rather racist as well-- don't like that from anyone, including the American nationalistic films. Although at least Brat 2 was funny sometimes.

Really? That film didn't really do it for me, although there were a few good parts.

Hi Everyone,

I enjoy listening to your movie discussions.

I just uploaded 16 Russian different films to the "Russian User Reviews" Section (including some of the films that you have been discussing in this thread). (A button for the Reviews section is that the top of this webpage)

Please feel free to review and rate them so that we can begin to build a resource for Russian film reviews and ratings there.

Also, you are welcome to upload new films (that are not yet listed)to the Russian Film section as well.

Thanks,

Khashyar

Hmm, tell me more about good Russian films, because my father is thinking of buying a Polish video store in the suburbs of Chicago and I'm telling him to expand the operations and also carry Russian films and media, especially since most of Chicagoland's Russian-speaking pop. is in the suburbs - not in the city-proper.

Posted by: inlove

Pawel, where in suburbs? I'm so tired of driving from western suburbs up to Devon each time I want to buy something Russian..

Posted by: Pawel_PL.USA

From what he told me (he lives in Schaumburg, I live in NW Chicago) the video store is in Arlington Heigts. If you want to buy something Russian in the suburbs try Wheeling-Buffalo Grove. There is a Russian-Jewish community there and a Mexican-Russian "Garden Fresh" on Hintze Rd near Olde Arlington Hgts Rd.

Posted by: inlove

Oh no, Buffalo Grove is even farther for me than Devon. I live in Oak Park.

Posted by: Pawel_PL.USA

Oh oh, Houston - we've got a problem ! I would try the Polish stores in Elmwood Park or the Harlem and Diversey area - most Polish stores usually carry a significant amount of Russian and Ukrainian products. Also try the Ukrainian area in the Chicago Ave and Sacramento area. That's gotta be closer to Oak Park than Devon.

1. Get Dish Network if you live in America
2. Get the International dish (RTVI, Ch1, HTB)
3. Watch RTVI
4. Enjoy both Brat and Brat 2 which they show uncut and uncensored occasionally.

They also run the complete Konvoi PQ17 from time to time. Those who speak English, Russian, and German will love it because it is great storytelling in all three languages running concurrently. And those learning the Russian language will enjoy Saturday's "Detski Mir" children's programming which is a great way to take in the language at a child's pace.

Luv,
Uncle Cheb

PS: I'll take my check now Dish Network for that bold endorsement.

Okay, this may not quite go along with the whole 'learning something from the movies' theme, but my favorite Russian movie as of yet is Night Watch, or Night Patrol, depending on how you interpret the name.....Nochnoee Dozor.

It is about the day watchers and night watchers, about good and evil, and the way that the two factions have determined how they will keep each other from completely taking over the world.....It's very interesting and with the special effects, it shows how far Russian film has come, and how close they can now make thier movies resemble Hollywood films that come out. It's great, and really works for me, since I love science fiction.

Can't wait to see Part 2, I think Oleg said it will be coming out soon.

Posted by: Jill

Yeah, I saw that a while back...For me, it didn't live up to the hype. Seemed like a Russian version of just more of the same...But it was OK.

I've just finished watching all of Mokovskaya Saga. All 22 episodes on 6 DVDs. Very interesting show about the key events in the lives of the members of an extended family as they live through the years from 1925 until just after Stalin's death.

I thought it was an excellent series. It can be hard to follow because of the number of characters and the great span of time, but the real story here is rather more metaphorical. It is not intended to tell us about these particular people; it just uses them as the canvas on which to tell us what the people of Russia went through during those years.

If you like Utomlennie Solntsem then you will probably like this. I plan to watch Moskovskaya Saga a second time but this time I'm going to stretch it out over 22 weeks to see it the same way it originally aired na pervom kanale in Russia.

wavetossed is back

My husband, Oleg, is currently watching Brigada, he says it is wonderful, I tried to follow it, but it is difficult to follow with out the subtitles, and unfortunatly, this one doesn't have subtitles.

For all the guys out there who like war genre series, "Strafbat" is excellent. For those ladies who want to yell "You Go Girl" after it's done, the complete series of "Taksistka" is out on PAL format.

Brat is without a doubt my favourite film of all time. Brat 2 was dissapointing. I wish it had not been made although Bodrov's charisma still shines out. Another great Russian film is "I wanted to see Angels" which is a gritty urban drama. This film has the greatest soundtrack of any Russian film. If you like Russian rock or not ( I can take it or leave it ) the Mongol Shudan score will blow you away, live and raw. "Mama ti nye plach" is maybe the best of the tracks on the film.

Anyone seen "Dom Durakov"? Very surreal when Brian Adams turns up on the train with the nut house inhabitants! Good film though.

Posted by: ben

Almost forgot another good Russian film, "Ekipazh" ( air crew ) which is a 70's film set in the world of Aeroflot pilots and cabin crew. Love, philosophy, action.........it's got it all!

I don't know why I hated that film so much. I just wasn't "buying it" as I was watching it. It was to war what "Hogans Heroes" was to war. But you know what they say: "Opinions are like belly buttons. Everyone has one and usually they are fuzzy".

I love Aircrew, because it an example of Soviet giantism - you get three movies for the price one - two Airport movies and Kramer vs Kramer.

G'day another awesome russian movie is

Come and See

an 80's soviet movie set in belarus during the great patriot war. its raw and brutal and is perhaps the definitive russian war movie.

cheers

I really like Brat because of the action and dialogue....
Haven't seen Brat 2 yet though.

Not a movie, but here it goes:

17 Moments of Spring (Semnadtsat mgnoveniy vesny).

Mesmerizing, astonishing! Need I say more?

Of course, we can't forget the classic "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears"... a sentimental favorite!
