I believe they use the PAL format in Rossiya just like in Western Europe.

I've sent some American DVD's to my GF and they don't work over there unless you know how to program the DVD player with a particular type of code.

Anyways, there are new DVD players which support different formats.

St. Petersburg books/videos in West Hollywood is selling some for $80 a piece.

If I understand correctly there are three different formats for VCR tapes. Europe, asia and america. They can convert them for a fee. I purchased a samsung which is supposed to play the different ones but doesn't always work. We had given my wifes family a power converter before so when they were here this summer we gave them an american vcr player. They can use the power converter to play it and use the vcr home video we send them. This seems to work for us.

It's a bit of a mess
Some russian VCRs are PAL and others are SECAM. Don't expect to have much luck. We finally gave up and had a few of our russian tapes converted to NTSC (american format) by a professional video place - not cheap (about $25.00 ea.) after bringing a VCR back from russia, and purchasing a third dual format Grundig model. The problem is, not just the VCR, but also the TV needs to be the same format as the tape. There is one converter out there that works flawlessly, but the cost is $265.00 so you gotta REALLY want to watch a lot of videos!

For DVDs, Best Buy and Brandsmart both carry "region free" DVD players. Oddly, they are the cheapest ones they carry at around $34.00 (brand name is Coby)

P.S. anybody wanna buy a brand new Samsung VCR and power adapter, cheap?

A lot of the VCRs sold in Russia (even the less expensive ones) are multi-system now. I've never had any touble playing video cassettes sent from the US on Russian VCRs.

You run into more trouble trying to play Russian cassettes on American VCRs.

Just ask your girlfriend if her VCR is multi system
