Libraryman , I would try to vist her town or somewhere close to her town because I would want to meet her freinds and her familly especially as you intend to have a serious relationship. A fiancee visa will not be given to the lady if you have never met her in her country . The other option is a tourist visa but l would , personally visit her and spend time together before paying for flight tickets for her to come to you.
Do you have her home address? In Russia the address is given as " House number 2 flat 3 " so you need both the house number and the apartment number. Also , I would not send any money even if she sounds convincing until you have both met each other because many men have been scammed of $$$$$ . Average monthly salary in Russia for a dentist is about $ 200- $ 300 a month so do not send money .

I would also take your time - spend at least a month with her ( this can be done by going to Russia several times ) and meet all her familly and friends . Big red flags include - unwillingness to meet her familly , unwillingness to be given home address ( another reason is there are alot of crazy men out there so maybe she might be cautious for her own safety ) and hints at gifts , expensive restaurants and tales of illness's which require immediate medical attention and hence immediate $$$$.

just my thoughts.

It is a very bad sign that she claims that she can get a visa here and doesn't want you to come there. Most serious Russian women know that it is next to impossible to get a US visa and on the other hand there are plenty of cities in Russia where she can meet you. A woman from Russia who claims she can get a visa here is usually a scammer - a woman from Russia who doesn't want you to come to Russia is usually a scammer.

Don't send any money, even when her mom goes to the hospital or she needs just a few dollars for her visa application.

The best way is to write her and tell her you plan to be in whatever the nearest big city is next month and will she meet you there? If you can't do the trip then hire a private detective to do a full background check on her. There's enough in just the few things you've mentioned to warrant one or both of these actions. Clearly you have some doubts yourself, as you posted this in the "Scammers" section.

Don't listen to the paranoid people. There advice is usually wrong and always too extreme. For instance, I don't understand how a foreigner can claim that all 140 million people in Russia know that it is difficult for single Russian women to get a U.S. visitor visa. Maybe it is common knowledge amongst people in the marriage agency business but most genuine girls looking for a husband, are not experienced in the marriage agency business.

Especially not girls who come from a small coal mining town like Belovo, population 90,000. And when you consider that a city like Ekaterinburg population 1.7 million has only 10 hotels, you can understand why a smalltown girl doesn't want you to visit her in her town. Also, the history of Belovo is that there was a big strike there that led to the downfall of the Soviet Union. Then, during the economic crisis of the 90's, a lot of people in this town did not get paid salaries for many months at a time. Life was very hard. I have visited a small mining town in Russia and half the people lived in small square hovels built from logs surrounded by scrap wood fences. No exterior paint, but the interiors are plastered and painted in cheery colors so it's not that dismal. The other half of the people lived in tiny apartments in building built 50 years ago that looked like they had never been maintained. Smashed mailboxes in the foyer, exterior doors that don't lock anymore, dirty concrete staircases, plaster falling off the exterior walls and sidewalks where the concrete is eroded so that the rebar sticks out.

In my girlfriend's town, she did find one decent hotel for me. It was a two-room hotel above a cafe with three tables in it located about three doors down the street from the mining company head office. Tell your girlfriend to ask the receptionist at the Belovo mining company head office if there is a place where they put up foreign guests. There is probably something along the lines of an apartment that is rented out, but nothing like what we would call a "hotel". However, when you visit, spend most of your time elsewhere. I suggest you fly to Novosibirsk and get her to meet you there. Then spend a few days in Kemerovo before going to Belovo for two or three days. This gives you a chance to get to know each other and eventually see her home environment. If she introduces you to her family, then you know that she likes you.

Geeze..Library Man,

for a name like 'Library Man' you don't spend much time in a library, do you?

How about a free copy of 'The Elements of Style" on me?

I got to say that it is hard to decipher Library Man’s messages. Are you writing in some special code?

All the FSU girls I have talked to, want you to visit! Some of them as soon as letter 1 or 2! It gets a little annoying sometimes!

Posted by: Jerico

In my opinion it is hard to tell the situation.

I agree with RomanticTx .Some of the things you are writing dont make sense to me Library Man,
In any case some people have said since she is from small town she may not know visa process but she seems like she knows enough about email and said herself she could get a visa with her job which doe not make sense to anybody that knows the process.
However she says do not send her money in envelopes because she knows it will be stolen , which is probably correct.
So her letters seem personal and are answering your questions I guess.
Ya I see some red flags going up but I guess i would just see where it goes.
You havent lost anything yet , which is good , but watch your back.
Just a guys opinion
Jerry

Gotta say Library Man, I agree with Jerico and RomanticTX. It's always a good idea to visit the girl in her hometown or where she's currently living, meet her friends or parents (preferrably both.)

For those of you still replying to this thread with advice about whether this girl might be a scammer or not - wavetossed, RomanticTx, Jerico, rtking....go back and read LIBRARY MAN's post on 09-10-2004.

In case you're having trouble understanding this message, allow me to interpret. He received a bank account number from this scammer and instructions on where he should send the cash. He realized "she" was definitely a scammer and will not be sending "her" anything. He does send his happy thoughts to those of us on this board who advised him that she was probably a scammer. He has not given up on meeting a good Russian woman, though, and will likely look to meet other Russian women in the future, with a careful eye for the scammers.

Ok, can we let this thread die now?

Hey Flashing Eyes,
This thread is not that old and I simply was responding to an active thread.
However you did a great job interpreting Librarys letter.
now it makes much more sense to me.
Now get out there and close down some other threads which have gone on and on and on
