Well, we have moved to Yerevan, so if anyone is planning a visit this way, drop a line. From what I've seen so far, it's a pretty nice city, and the food is excellent. Need I even mention the cognac?
So come on over!

Hi Jill!
Congratulations on the relocation, I trust everything went well? Not too many cardboard boxes lost?
Hope you will be able to give some insights on living in Armenia. I for one know very little about this place.
Good luck!

Jill!
Good luck in Yerevan! Pictures please! I have never been to Armenia but I would love to see it. Does it feel as safe as Kiev?

You know, we got VERY lucky in the move. We had 8 bags of various sizes and a dog with us. All this on an airline with a 20 kg weight limit (including carry on). They only charged us $100 for excess baggage (which my company reimbursed anyway) and didn't lose a single thing! We were also able to take the dog on board with us without any difficulties either
Yerevan seems very nice so far. Superficially, it seems like any city in Ukraine or Russia (Soviet style architecture, stores, etc), but underneath it I'm told the culture is a whole different ball game. We haven't had a chance to discover that yet, but the people I work with have been trying to describe bits and pieces of it to me. So it's kind of exciting
My husband loves it here already. He actually says that he likes Yerevan better than Kiev He especially likes Armenian food, and says it has a "calmer" feel to it than Kiev. Personally, I still miss Ukraine
From what people have told me the city is VERY safe. Some crime, of course, but no more than any other city.
We're still in a temporary apartment, but we're moving into a permanent apartment (well, a 10 month lease, anyway) tomorrow morning. The apartment we'll be living in is MUCH nicer than our apartment in Kiev was (although a bit more expensive). We're right on the central square, so also very convenient.
The language issue isn't too bad, either. Everyone knows Russian, but sometimes the accent is a little hard for me to decipher. I do plan on getting a tutor and at least trying to learn some basic Armenian.
I'll post pictures once we've started getting out a bit more and taking some.
