I have submitted my I129F to Nebrasksa and now am ready for the long wait. I would like to buy my beautiful Russian lady a computer so that her and her 2 boys can start to learn about them and also maybe help them with their english. Does anyone have any suggestions how I might go about this is inexpensively as possible. Her internet access in the evenings will cost her about $20 per month and if I were buying here, I would just jump on line and order a dell but are the russian keyboards different or should I just have her buy one locally there. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I thought of maybe just getting an inexpensive laptop for her so she could bring it with her when she comes here. I am open to suggestions?
Thanks , Rick

low end computer in Russia cost same as low end computer here. Buy it over there and potentially have a "support contract" to help with virus and hardware problems. Russian keyboards different as well as Russian Windows XP. Say about $600

Of course you can spend a little more on a laptop and/or go all American keyboard/ENglish Windows XP. Choice is yours.

*If* you were to buy a computer for her then I would recommend the "R2", which should run you $300-$400.

However, my suggestion is that you don't buy it. The fiance visa (which you have already submitted) should take about 4 months, which means that you're paying for a computer for 3 1/2 months. It's not a practical investment. A better use of these funds would be English lessons and driving lessons. Buy a computer once they arrive here.

This is a good point for me to mention for anyone reading that it's often better to make foreign brides cognizant of the fact that there's a big difference between what they saw on "Dallas" TV reruns and movies, and how most Americans really live day-to-day. Exposing your bride-to-be to a luxurious lifestyle for the few months before she comes over here is not going to help her to understand the realities of high debt, expensive monthly payments including house, car, electricity, food, etc., and inadequate retirement savings that most Americans face.

I also think your time and money would be better spend getting them used to the realities of life in the US. Perhaps a subscription to USA Today along with English lessons would be a good choice. Also keep in mind the 'little' things, such as the use of the English system (cups, feet, miles, pounds, quarts, ounces, etc) in liue of the Metric system (liters, meters, kilograms). Computer skills are a minor thing when compared to the 'everyday' cultural and social differences they will have to learn.

You may wish to buy a dual language keyboard. They are difficult to locate in america. We have our second one from the ukraine. Wore both sets of letters off the first one. We toggle between ukrainian, russian and english.
