Made a fool out of myself on a Russian Bus

< It was a cold winter day. My boyfriend and I hopped on a crowded bus in Ekaterinburg. The exhaust from the cars and the bus was really getting to me (I was trying to get over a Russian hangover)I was doing this the night before Back to the subject, So we hopped on the bus, I was getting nauseous so I said out loud "phewy" at that very moment everyone on that bus turned their heads towards me in shock. This woman with her child covered his ears and embraced him while looking at me in horror. My friend turned to me and said in english,"American girl, never say such thing!" I said whaaaaa-whaaa'd I say? He explained that what I said sounded like a very bad Russian word ( I won't say it here but the word starts with an H) So I was so embarrassed. I explained to him that in English phewy is just something we say in the Western part when something stinks. Yes, it was not such a nice day in Russia for me.

That's hilarious. What you wanted to say was "Foo!"

He he. Thanks for the story. I'll add that to my "anecdote" file for future Russian parties, if that's okay with you.

I laughed after it happend ..... These were people I'll never see again and well....you just have to laugh at yourself sometimes...life is too serious anyway .....

I'll answer your other question later but I'm in a closing so I don't have time right now.

Ah, so you learned about "Hooey!"

I had a crash course in Russian obscenities by Andrei while i was in Omsk.

It seems it is only acceptable to use at hockey games

He used it a bit when Locomotive was playing against Avangard in Omsk

The English equivalent is D**k!

Hee hee...And stay away from forms of "yahoo."

It reminds me of a friend of mine who was having dinner with some Russian people. He told the family how much better Russian bread is and complained that American bread is "full of preservatives." They were surprised to say the least.

I had my own embarassing incident with that word! Suffice it to say, I was being teased by a group of Russian men about age and preservativs (In English) but with a total different meaning in Russian )))) oh my was I red!

It took my wife and stepdaughter quite a while to get used to the southern version of the word "Yes". Here most people say "YEP" . This is very close to the Russian "YEB" which is the F word in Russian. I use the word all of the time.
