help, is this a scam?

Hi, My name is Harry, living CT, one hour drive from NYC. More than one year ago, a girl sent an email to me and asked for date. She said she lived in Samara, Russia. I responded. since then, We have communicated thr. internet for a year. Normally, she wrote to me once week. Everything looks normal to me until today. Three days ago, she said she wanted to visit me in USA and she could get a tourist visa. I responded her and told her if she needed monney I would help.(before this she never mentioned any money). I am confused. This are two messages I received today(7/10)

I have found the information about the visa. Unfortunately, I am
afflicted.
I did not think, that for the registration all documents is necessary a
lot of money.
It is a very sad for me, but I believe that money will not prevent our
future meeting!!!
The destiny gives us chance and we should not lose it!
It is sad for me, because in my life always something prevents my
happiness!

In my city of Samara there is visa service office which help people to
obtain a visa,
To pass medical exams, reception of the International passport and
other services.

I wrote you in my last letter that I have found out, that your country
don't let
young and lonely woman come to USA for long time.
Therefore I should come to you as a tourist, by tourist (visiting) visa
of category
B-2.
The visa of category B-2 is given out to tourists, people leaving in
USA for rest,
visitings of friends or relatives.
Visas of categories B-1 and B-2 are most distributed. Now the American
embassy in
Moscow gives out the dual visa of both categories B-1/B-2.
Restrictions: The visa of category B-1/B-2 does not suppose work in
USA.
I have no the right to receive the salary from the employer in USA.
Having this visa
it is impossible to work in USA on hiring or to supervise over any
enterprise.
Accepting side only may compensate invited business charges (the daily
allowance,
cost of residing, transport charges).
Prolongation term of stay: Change and change of the status.
Legally being on territory of USA, the owner of the not immigration
visa (except for
visas of categories C, D and K) may request sanctions of Service of
immigration and

1)Prolongation of terms of the stay under working visa;

The embassy of USA in Moscow recommends to address for reception of the
visa
beforehand, it is desirable 1-2 months prior to date of prospective
trip.
Cost of services of Visa service on 1 persons: 7000 roubles (a full
package of
services with consultation, the analysis of documents and preparation
for interview).
If the visa in USA is made out for the first time, or refusals in
reception of the
visa they strongly recommend to take advantage of a full package
earlier took place.
Gathering in embassy are in addition paid:
Gathering at a rate of 3000 roubles for consideration of the
application on the visa;
Gathering for delivery of passport 500 of roubles.
The specified gathering are paid at submission of documents on the
visa.
Therefore all sum of money is 10500 Russian roubles or about 375
American dollars USD.
Unfortunately there is one question, which interests me.
I don't know, whether you will understand me? It is a very difficult
for me to
discuss it.
Simply, the cost of the visa and tickets are very large for me. I don't
have such
large sum of money.
To obtain the visa, to pass medical exams, reception of the
International passport,
consultations in visa service office costs 375 American dollars!

I do not remember, whether or not I wrote you, but my month salary is
approximately 110 dollars!!!
From this money I pay for the services of Internet cafe, I buy food and
still I have not a lot of money.
From another part of money I buy things most necessary for everyone
woman.
I am glad very much, that I have my lovely daddy and mum.
They always help me and it is easier for me to live on my salary.

Hello,

I don't think she is intentionally trying to scam you. Here is what I understand:

1) She mentions getting a medical exam for her visa.

She is probably unaware that this is only required for a fiance visa. Many ladies are misinformed often by agencies or by other misinformed people.

In order for her to get a fiance visa you would have had to have met her.

2) She has been writing to you for a year. I think that says a lot. She would be working very hard to scam you. It takes much effort to write for such a long period of time.

You should explain to her about the difficulty of her receiving a tourist visa to the USA.

Read some of the other post here, do a search if necessary.

Explain to her that it would be necessary for you to meet her either in her country or in a neutral country that does not require for her to have a visa.

If she agrees then if I were you I would try to see her as soon as possible!!!!

I feel released after I read your message. Thank you very much. I am really confused. Here are positive and negative things about her:

Things Positive:
1) All emails she sent to me were consistant. Many times mentioned her mom and dad, her best friend. Names, things matches.
2) The time she sent email was between 6 - 9 PM Russia time(which meant she went there after work). Two emails she sent at 12:35 PM and 13:42 PM ( I assumme they were lunch break)
3) She never mentioned money before
4) She wrote to me over one year (I think since 3/2003. until 5/2004, I am getting serious. BTW, I received many letters from other girls, never feel the girl is serious).
5) She mentioned many times, (she is an attorney assitant) told me what kind case she worked on
6)She sent me about 10 photos. in all photo, she dressed very formal.
Things negative:
1) She never told me her home address(I might never asked)
2) She said she did not have any phone at home(is this normal in Russia?)
3) She is very beautiful, blond hair, blue eyes, and young(28), hard to imagine she could fall in love with me( I am divorced with a 10 years daughter and 42 years old).

I do not care if send her a few hundred dollars. I really want to make her happy(even things do not work out in the future). I just do not know what to do. If things do not work out, she may feel hurt. Should I give a try? or send her $500 US and wish her the best. then walk away? Oh, my god, I do not know?

If your having doubts I think you know what you should not do.
That is send her money.
If seems strange to me that after a year she does not give you her address.
When i was in Russia everybody it seemed had a cell phone , even the kids had them at least in Moscow.
She may not have a phone it is possible. She certainly has an address though.
Humm , I dont know but it seems like its turning into some sort of scam to me, sorry to say it but if you read other post here you will see the pattern.

I would ask for her address and put that $500 toward a plane ticket. A personal meeting should answer any questions or doubts. Don't give the age difference a second thought. Even if there is no chemistry you will it least have made the effort. It is a risk but all reward comes with some degree of risk. If nothing else it will be a trip you will not soon forget. Experience the culture and people.

Is there a reason why you're not going to Samara to visit her? Please answer this huge burning question. If it were me, I'd have already visited her by now.

I don't know if it's a scam; there are a few red flags and many other things that discount the possibility.
Have you added all of the costs together, including airfare? It can get pretty expensive for her to travel here. I'd be surprised if airfare alone was under $500. At $110/mo, it'd take her a LONG time to save up enough to visit you. (I won't even get into the extreme difficulties of her getting a visa to begin with).

If she lives in small town she may not have home phone and cell phone. About giving home adress: it is not always safe to give home address in internet. You never know where and how it can be used. I think you need to visit her yourself. Offer that to her and look what happen.

Other things you need to know are:

The age thing really isn't too much of a issue. You need to understand the family values of Russia and what a word like "family" means to you and what it means to her. She is most likely looking for a stable and loving husband who will help the children become strong and have a better life than you will have. By you having a child now, raising your child will prove to her that children mean a lot to you. (sad note: many fathers in the FSU abandon their children after divorce)

YOU have to meet her first. In her country before she can come to the US. I don't care what anybody says, that's the law!
Unless she can prove she a "Donald Trump" and doesn't need your money, you will have to meet her.
Take lots of pictures to prove you were there. Make sure the pictures are with back grounds of famous things. (a tree looks like a tree any where so don't use them) buildings, events..ect. (you will need to prove this in your paperwork)

You will have about a 6 to 9 month wait for her paperwork to go through the system for her to come to the USA.

Traveling to Samara isn't too expensive. Maybe around 600.00 from JFK to Samara. Hotels are cheaper there than Moscow. I will warn you.. it is a laid back city. Very little excitement. Personally, I would have a trip planned out as a tourist to enjoy the sites just in case your meeting with her is a disappointment. And if you two "click" you can take her to the sites.

Hiring a translator is cheap. (20.00 a day) if you need one.

The average income for a woman in Samara is in the area of 200.00 a month. Oh yeah, the average work day starts around 9 or 10 am to 5 or 6 at night. (I could be wrong, just seems that way.. lol)

I really don't think she is scamming you. I do think somebody is scamming her and she doesn't understand what is involved in this move. Maybe if you send her the link to the government web site explaining the requirements she would have a better understanding. Tell her you want to meet her first and visit her family so they know she will be in good hands.

Since you have the phone number.
Have them answer all of your questions. Ask them how many successful visas they process to America each month for a single Russian girl.

Reading what you have told us, and the messages from her that you have posted, maybe you have found a very sincere lady.
How long do you expect her to wait? what is stopping you from going to visit?
If you don't go to visit, you are just a 'keyboard romeo', when you started this venture, what did you expect?
Get on a plane and go, or you owe this lady more than an apology.
You sound like you are sincere in all this, if she is writing to you for a year, this is enough, you should have been there by now.
As they say 'sh*t or get off the pan'.

If you don't visit, YOU are the scammer, expecting her to visit is like hoping to win the lottery, of course it's possible but maybe you're gonna wait a long time.

Spamer, your entire post was spot on. I had the same sense when reading this; a 'travel agency' or someone was trying to scam her.
Excellent point on the age difference; I considered it to be completely unimportant. It's less than 15 yrs, and she's over 25.

Skooter, your post was also spot on. Especially the keyboard romeo/scammer thing. I have read too many stories where these women save each and every correspondance from their man ... they are people with feelings. And since she's from Samara, she probably believes in the fairy tale romance and now has quite a bit of emotional investment in those correspondances. I read on another site (I can't vouch for the truthfulness) that only about 5% of the guys who write women actually visit them.

By the way, it's 'sh*t or get off the pot,' but I'm extremely impressed that you've picked up so much american slang. ... I'm looking forward to seeing your country showcased this summer in the Olympics.

Thank again for all of you. I just got my US citizenship three weeks ago(6/18/04) although I have become a perminant resident since 1993. Never realized I needed a US passport until I felt a serious relation with Nadya. It took over one year to become US naturalized citizen. Considering all long process regarding immigration since 9/11, I feel lucky. One of my friend is still waiting for INS response. He has waited for almost two years. I should get my US passport in 4-6 weeks and another two weeks for Russian visa. I agreed with you all. I own her a big apology.
I need a big favor:
1) Is it safe to travel in Russia for a person like me? ( I only know two Russian words(How to pronounce Nadya and Yes. which I Learned from movie: Birthday Girl played by Nicole Kidman and Ben Chaplin)

Do not send money as has already been stated on previous replies. Once you've met her then yes maybe, but not till you've met her.

Difficult to know whether she is scamming you or not. The fact that she has written to you for 12 months puts her in a good light plus the second email she sent you after the money request apologising for asking also says a lot.

Easiest thing to do is go over there and see how well you get on. Enjoy the culture and see a bit of the place. Just don't send money till you've met her eh. Learn from our mistakes

First of all - do not believe in propaganda that goes from your sh*y movies. They are so far from reality as black and white.
Travels to Russia can be safe and can be dangerous. You need to ask your travel agent what places in city you need to avoid, where to eat, where to change money and so on. All good travel agencies give small training before client go to a trip.

Find and buy tourist's talk-book, I am not sure if I call it right - there you can read most useful phrases on russian in english transcription.

On your place I would prefer to use service of your local or some good known US travel agency. Usually they have agents in many cities in countries and in Russia too. I recommend you read sites:

www.gotorussia.com is the company I use. I have never had any problems with them. (they also have a office in Moscow) I was in Samara only for 2 days so there is not much I can tell you about the city.

Clarita is correct get a Russia to English book. (Big help!) Translators are cheap and you can find one with no problems. I know a translator in Samara too, but I can't find her email address...sorry.

I suggest you fly from Moscow to Samara. I think it's about 100.00. There is a train from Moscow to Samara but the train is not too enjoyable.
Most airlines in Moscow have English speaking employees. So they will point you to the correct place to go. (come to think of it most of the cops in the airport speak English too)

Find a hotel with English speaking staff. (big help) You never know, you may be able to hire one of them to be a translator for you. (Russia is a poor country, good tips go a long way)

There are a few things you need to learn about Russia, like don't use a taxi cab. Go to the places your travel agent sends you too. Hotels will pick you up from the Airport for a small charge.
Basically, it is a safe place to go. Russia is a beautiful country with great people. Politeness goes a long way. If it wasn't for the language you would think you were in any USA city.

There are many other things to learn like things to bring as a gift. Do's and don't. You have time to learn them before you leave. The first thing to learn is forget everything you have ever learn about Russia in the movies. LOL

(like married women wear there rings on the right hand, ring on the left mean divorced)

Hi , I do not think that this is a scam - as previously stated it sounds like she doesnt know what is involved in getting a visa and is maybe trying to make the first move in meeting you face to face ( its been a year since you two have been writing to each other - right ? ) . I would meet her in Samara and have Plan A and Plan B in place- Plan A - you meet and you like her and she likes you - you take her to the sights take lots of pictures . Plan B - you dont like her in which case you go visit the local historical places or visit Moscow - either way you cant lose because its a trip of a lifetime - enjoy!!

HDL, CONGRATULATIONS on your citizenship!
And great job stepping up to the plate (another slang term for skooter ) and being a man and going to visit her.

Although learning Russian would be great, I think that your remaining time would be better spent learning about Russian women, customs, and cultural differences vs the west. For instance, did you know that you're supposed to give an odd number of roses to a woman? (an even number is for funerals). Go to as many different Russian woman discussion forums that you can find (russianwomendiscussion, rwguide, global7, etc) and learn what motivates a Russian woman and what they expect from men.

Now, Rattlesnake suggested a Plan B. Have a Plan B. Do not stay in her home (at least initially); you may not have a 'connection' in person, and that would lead to an awkward situation. IF things don't work out, perhaps go to a marriage agency in Samara and find another woman to date.

I can almost guarantee that your woman will be elated that you are going to her; that's all the proof you need that she's not a scammer.

Just my .02 worth and a differing opinion: Don't be afraid of the taxis there. In fact, EVERYONE is a taxi cab. If you stand on the curb with your arm extended pointing at the street, someone will quickly stop and offer you a ride for money. Learn a few Russian phrases telling them that you speak only a little Russian, telling them where to go, and negotiating price before you get in, you will have an enjoyable time. Most Russian will jump at the chance to earn a little something on the side. And if you are lucky enough to get someone who speaks English, they are far more entertaining than the legendary New York City cabbies. And can make you aware of places "off the beaten path" that only the locals know about.

I think I've taken more rides from citizens in Russia than I have from actual cabbies. I've also prayed a lot over there because the average citizen has nothing on the NASCAR drivers of the US.

PS: Here's a tip from Uncle Steve. When they shoot me a money figure, I make them write it on a small pad I carry saying I don't understand. That way there is absolutely no miscommunication on the numbers they may be mumbling, and if you pay a little something extra they know it's a tip. Also it's a good place to bargain with them. Just write a counter offer below their number if theirs is outrageous, smile, and say "horasho?". They'll almost always take your figure.

Why not? Now we have good taxi services in almost all cities. You can call for taxi any time and they have fixed prices. It is not safe to take ANY car in the streets, this is right. I would not recommend to do it if you need to go alone.

Because this is his 1st trip to Russia. He doesn't speak Russian. (he will be lost and confused) Knowing this, it would be smarter to let the hotel make arrangements for him.

Hi, All. Thank you again for all input you made. You are all great people. I feel more confidence than even after read the info you provided. In the past two weeks I have watched a few Russia movies. They are kind old but I learned alot things. The more things I learn about Russia, the more I feel this is a great country with rich culture and passion, full of long histry and story. I really enjoy learning more.
I just received my US passport. It took about two weeks to get it(lot fast than I thought.) It takes about two weeks to get Russian visa. Other thing like Hotels or travel agent seems easy. only problem is that I have less than two weeks vacation(although I have 18 days sich days but can not be used except for sick reason). The biggest problem is: I have not received any reply from the girl. I have sent her four emails but she did not reply. I do not why, but it is hard for me to forget her after a long year email. I do not know why she stopped to email me but I want to find out why. I want to know more about her. At least I want to see her face to face. It does not mean she has to be married to me. I just want to know the girl, who email me so long, over one year. What I can do to make her life better(if I can). Our life is too short to learn everything and too pity to forget everything we learned. Our life just likes a shooting star. We know where we came from and we know where we are going. When two persons’ life trespass way overlaps, then they become acquaintances.

What should you do? WAIT. I see no reason for her to just abandon you after such a long time of communicating with you. There can be many causes for and interruption in emails. Hope all works out and that she responds to you soon.

If i am correct you have been speaking to this lady for one year? so you should have gone to meet her much sooner than later>, i understand this is your first time to Russia? i would start to look for another lady now and ask her to meet you at airport because the biggest problem you will have is the language barrier problem.

You need to meet a lady who is honest and stable and who wants a serious relationship with a Western man, the ladies are there, its just that you have to go and look for them, but also keep away from the party girl, bar girl and the lady who likes presents and will have no respect for you or your money.

You seem a good man so start to look for a lady and get talking now!!! not next week but now.

I think misunderstanding? I was trying to say that (some ladies) in Russia are inviting men to their Country not to find a Husband but for presents and to have a good time on this persons money.

I DON'T think she is scamming

I know how difficult it is for a Russian woman to be offered help and not to appear over excited. She will be very scared at the moment i guess, and will need your every support to get her visa.

Best advice is to give her a short visit and judge for yourself how she feels before committing yourself further.

All i can say if a man needs to travel 3.5 hrs by plane to have sex then its a very poor world we live in?.

Not all men are the same just like all Russian ladies are not the same, but there are some very bad Russian ladies out there who will use God to scam a man out of money and i know this from my own experience.

I went to church to get engaged and re baptised in S.P.B and to be married in 3 months to this lady i trusted with my heart but it was a scam just to get £500 out of me for a fake wedding..

This is why i am anti scam, i will allways fight for the person who has nothing in life but once they cross me this person is never my friend again.

Clarita you seem nice person and i understand you a little more and understand why you said to me about living in someones home and not hotel.

I look for wife and i NEVER make the same mistake again and Clarita, if a lady tells the man from the start(look i am looking for husband not sex and if this upsets you, then your not the man for me).

This would let the guy know the lady is serious about marriage but as we all no that sometimes in life when two people meet things do happen and its out of two peoples control.

I am not talking about myself but life in general and if you smile with life, life will smile with you.

However there is a certain POV out there that states that this is what we Westerners are all trying to do. No it's not right in the main, but there will always be a percentage of males that haven't grown up and still think with their little fella

Case in point, when I was talking to my mate about going to visit this lady from Russia I'd been talking to(before I found out she was scamming me) his response was go over there f$%k her all week and then dump her. Ok he's French, though I don't know if that has any bearing on his attitude.

That sort of attitude appalled me, but there is a percentage of men that do think like that. I don't think(or at least hope) that it is most men's way of thinking as Clarita said, but the actions of a few will always colour other peoples perceptions especially if those actions are bad.

For instance in the general publics view in the West most people would see Russian women looking for a Western man as them trying to escape Russia and get a Western passport. And while some undoubtedly are doing just that I do not think this is the case with all.

Sorry Harry, that sounds rather lame. Sure Russia has a crime rate, but I doubt it's any worse than New York though. As long as you keep your wits about you I don't think anywhere is 'unsafe' Ok walking down the middle of a Baghdad street might not be that advisable for us lilly white boys

As far as someone else having responsibility for your safety while in another country. Bollox! We each have responsibility for our own safety.

Hate to say it, but she's starting to sound like a scammer. I could be wrong and she could genuinely concerned for your safety. Treat with caution and still insist on going to see her first.

When a woman doesnt want you to visit her in her country, meet her friends and family, IT is a HUGE, HUGE red flag! It is always best to not ignore such monumental red flags like this.

Ill give you an example. I have been writing a lady from Russia. She is seemingly attractive, kind and very well educated and intellegent. I suggest to her that she should come down to meet me when I am in Ukraine. She tells me this is a great idea. Then her "agency manager" sends me a email telling me that if I will send him $450.00 for her airfare he will make all the "arrangements"

No dice.... Why cant she make her own reservations, tell me what airlines the reservations are under and I will then pay for the tickets or better yet, she purchase the tickets and when she arrives I re-emburse her.

Instead of being a louie-the-looser I send back a short message telling Viktor, that I do not know him and I am not sending anyone that I do not know money.

These scammers rely on your fear of loss. If there is no fear of loss, the scam can not work. Never fall in love with a photo or flowery letters. Never make that kind of emotional investment in someone YOU DO NOT KNOW and HAVE NOT MET. IE you dont know them if you havent met them.


Want to see just how serious your "honey" really is?

Tell her that unless you can meet her in her environment, meet her family, that it is not possible for you to continue corresponding with her. That you are serious in the search for your wife. If you are to be with her, her family should at least know who you are....you get the idea...

Harry, IMHO she is listening to gossip at internet cafe and false information regarding her ability to visit you. My advice is to tell her to come if she can but you will not pay it. Either way if you are both to meet one day one of you must travel to the other and the person who pays should be the one who travels. Remember that this would be your first meeting and it would really suck if she traveled to meet you and you do not like her.

That POV is universal voiced by Western Women or GCG and scammers. Feminsts have hammered into the Western Male psyche that his natural instinct and sexual drive is somehow a wrong and perverse thing. European people are far, far less hung up on sex and sexuality in general than westerners.

For the most part, in the west men get this on going message. Sex is bad and if you are a man you can never let a woman know you want to have sex with her. To do so makes you a baser like animal, pig ect.... this of course is absurd. Women like and enjoy sex every bit as much as a man.

Again, this is a view that is in stark contrast of what I get in feedback from people I personally ask them there view on an American man marrying a woman from Russia or Ukraine. Instinct tells me to stay clear but experience tells me that making judgements before finding out the real truth can lead to major upsets.

If you protect your pocket then what can you lose??
If you abandon her and she is just nieve / inexperienced / scared / taking advice from other and still the woman of your dreams then you will have lost much more.

Something is wrong here........but try to find out what and why, dont dump her, just protect yourself and learn the real truth.

Actually, I am not emotionally involved so I do not think I will loose anything. Interesting thing to me is that she can write to me over one year, just for this? I do not have answer but it seems to me that either she is not mature or she is manipulated by someone? Motivation is not clear to me yet? For a few hundreds dollars wasting so long time, does that worth it? I don’t know. I think I need to learn a lot more about Russian girl than I expected if I want to marry to a Russian girl. It is very high risk. I do not feel upset. I just feel it is very interesting. I do not think I will send any money, just wait to see what she will say in her next letter

I have re read the posts and I think that " her " reluctance to have you visit her is strange as is the fact that that she has never told you where she lives. The fact is travelling to the fsu is no more dangerous than travelling anywhere outside your own country and she is just trying , IMHO , to scare you into agreeing that you pay for her to come to see you. As you probably know ,
a visa for her to visit you will never be granted until you two have met.
I would , in my opinion , write to her and tell her you are coming to meet her and see her reaction . If she still sends you letters telling you not to come you have your answer in black and white - its just a game for her. ( assuming she is just trying to get money off you)
You wrote that its interesting that she could write for over a year " just for this ". Well , some guys are willing to send money and they learn the hard way that as soon as they send the $$$$ the corresondance stops and the lady vanishes. Patience is the key to some scams and sometimes the attitude is like that of a fisherman - maybe something will bite and Ill reel the fish in !! In the fsu sending $ 500 may not seem alot to you but it may be 2 or 3 months wages depending on where she lives and it would be worth the effort to write to you ( if she is a scammer ) because you may send money .
IMHO , the best approach is to not discuss money , not send money and keep in mind what you are looking for - a woman who you will love and respect you .

Actually, about 5 weeks ago, after I received her desperate letter( as you can see in my first post). I sent her an email and told her that if she could get passport, I would send her money. Two weeks later she emailed me back. She said she went on vacation with her parents at a place not too far from her home. She provide her home address, her family name, and bank info, etc. She told me to use Western Union to transfer money, etc. I think from that point she believed I would send money to her.

Stay away from Western Union mate! For a start you've no insurance if she is a scammer. Secondly that's the most well used scam ploy ever.

There's a message that runs through all these posts DO NOT SEND MONEY!

As ConnerVT says if she's a scammer(and it seems increasingly likely) you won't be the only one she has on her hook. For all you know she's been on holiday enjoying the earnings from another scam? Just a thought.

( And alot of the people on this forum have visited the fsu and can verify what I have said - please ask others if you are uncertain ). Yes , there are people who want to rip you off because you cant speak russian but thats the same in any country .
My advice is - visit her in her country . You have done very well to keep the correspondance going for a year now , ( all the women I wrote to wanted a meeting in 3 - 6 months max) but if you want to know if she is the right woman go and meet her- you have her address. If you are worried if the address isnt right send flowers to her address- if the flowers arrive then you know she is telling the truth . But do not send money- it will seriously harm your relationship with her if you do - keep money out of the equation.

Harry it is this simple. You will need to go to her if you want to meet!!! There is no sense in sitting here and asking us this and that question. If you want to meet her, you must go to her. Her coming to meet you is not an option!!! If you or she is not willing to make this happen in her country, then drop it!! I am not trying to be mean, just realistic. I seriously doubt this is a scam. She has been communicating with you for over a year. Just tell her you want to meet her and wish to come to her country.
Often these woman are very marriage minded and I am sure if she is serious, she is probably getting impatient!!! She should gladly wish you to come to meet her. If she is not, then move on!!! Sorry for being blunt. Just stating the realities here.

All: I do not know, man. This is getting weird to me. I get three sources and found that the address she gave to me in Samara was fake.
1) I ordered the flower delivered to her home. They never made delivery. The delivery company never told me this until I made a phone call.
2) I emailed two hotels in Samara. I told them that I would like to make a reservation before I know how far from this hotel to the address the girl gave to me:
Hotel A answer: I never heard this address in my entirely life.
Hotel B answer: There is no such address.

It is very interesting. I do not believe this girl or someone else emailed me for over one year (since 03/2003), just for ? I have no idea what for? ( a few hundrads dollars?)

I feel very interesting because I feel this is new trend in the future scam or what? Last time email I received from her was on 8/30.

Yes , just for a few $$$ someone is willing to write because A) I think you view 100 dollars as small change B) this is not a big amount to you C ) You probably would have sent the money - so there was a chance of receiving 100 dollars and D) probably you are not the only person that is receiving letters from the same source asking for money and some guys do send the money and so it is a game of patience and psychology - the write knows that for an american $100 is small change and they know also that many guys know practically nothing about long distance relationships ( i did not when I first started ) so the odds are all in favour of the writer of these letters.

Now you have concrete proof that the address is fake , how much more proof do you need ?

All on this forum beg , urge , plead with you to move on and find soemone who 1) can at least give you a truthful home address and 2) doesnt ask for money without ever having met you - these
are the basic's of the long dfistance pen pal .

iF you want more motives for asking for money 1) its easy money 2) you are not the only one he/she is writing to 3) greed 4) Life is hard in the fsu and soft touch mnen are found in every country of the world 5) The person may need a new door or kitchen - you may be the source of this new kitchen . 6) It beats working for a living 7) The person may want a new winter jacket - you are helping her/ him.

Ok this "girl" has scammer written all over her. But it's understandable that after more than a year of writing back and forth, about once a week, it is difficult to accept - "she" has you hooked.

Just to put this in perspective though, a year is 52 weeks - many scammers write daily and for about two months (60 days - 60 e-mails) before asking for money. This variation you have received is nothing more than the traditional scam spread out over time - you have gotten your 60 communications, it just took more than a year.

What can you do now? Since it's obvious that you don't want to just walk away at this point, I have two suggestions:

First, you can hire a PI. There are numerous good agencies in Russia that will quickly help you get to the bottom of this.

Second, you can visit Russia. If you go, my suggestion would be to stay in the nearest large city and plan to meet this woman plus about 2 others, who you will locate and begin writing right away. Figure out what city you're planning to stay at and then go to an online marriage agency that services this city or a nearby one, and write to women from this agency. Hire a translator (either find one yourself or through the agency) to help you get around while in Russia. Odds are this "woman" you are writing now (who I believe is a scammer) won't show but you will have a good vacation and hopefully one of the other 2 women will pan out.

Life is very strange - maybe this "woman" who wrote to you for so long isn't the one but maybe "she" will help lead you to the one who is.

I just read over all emails she sent to me (since March this year I deleted all before that month). I do not believe she is a scammer. If she is, she must be super genius, overqualified for a CIA job. Actually I didn’t pay much attention to her email until now. I was super busy, working in New York, living in Connecticut, going to school in Massachusetts, and seeing my daughter in Great Boston area every Sunday, plus receiving over hundreds email each day. Being so active, never realize so many things have been happening around me. Just like one of my colleagues once mentioned: GOD put us on earth to accomplish certain things, as long as we never get them done, we never die. I am so happy. Just finished my defense for my Ph.D. research and turned in my dissertation (still owe two publications to my Advisor). I feel so relax, oh, my GOD. Time is really flying. Now I have time to think about all this. It is a little bit pity for me that I never spend much time to read and answer her questions.

Odd is, I have no idea how she get my profile. I only remember I posted it once somewhere over the internet either in 1998 or 1999. That time, I did receive several responses from RG, but I didn’t get chance to reply to them. Now she must have a profile of a guy, 5-6 years younger than me.

Regarding the false address either incorrect translation or her defensive nature. If she wants me to transfer some money, the bank has to know her correct address in order for her to pick it up. This is my hypothesis.
If she emails me back again, good luck to me. If she doesn’t, good luck to her.

1). I used the mail box of one of my friend (who is a much younger and good looking guy) and sent her an email with attachment of this guy’s photo, pretending receiving her email a long time ago and want to know her better. She never replied.
2) I sent her a Yahoo Greeting card(I would receive a copy if it’s picked up). So far I haven't. I believe she may abandon her email box.

It is fascinating to me that she’s so mysterious. I don’t believe she is a scammer. She may become one if I send her some money. She may just like other girls in FR, dreaming about new life, new future, someday living in a good life. Under her circumstance ( mother – a cook, father – a carpenter, her income $110 per month, no brother or sister, and never mentioned other relatives), her only choice is to find a man (a Westerner) who can financially support her. Of course, money is a big issue. That’s only way she can get out of FR. I feel kind sympathy to her.
Actually I don’t mind sending her a few hundreds dollars, but that may promptly convert her to a professional scammer. I don’t think this is good for any one.
If she is a very decent girl, I may try my best to help her, but I don’t think I’m going to see her or be her internet lover in future. By the way, I doubt she will email me back.

Harry, you sound like a good guy and are learning in the school of hard knocks. Sorry this has happened to you. The woman (or man) is a scammer and probably just moved on to use a new email box, name, and pictures. You need to just forget about it and move on, you are way overthinking the situation and her motives or intentions. The more you think, the more confused you will become as to someone's intentions, especially when it comes to women.

The best way is for you to just go visit Russia and visit a dating agency while you're there. You can meet a new woman or two women a day while you're there and see them in person. NEVER get hung up on one woman, ever.

Anyway, if it is, this is probably a very well established, clever, and nature-born scammer I encountered. This has gone on so long what are you expecting to get out of this, why do you continue?

There are plenty of women you can write to and meet, it is easy to see scammers everywhere, but are you serious about going? or do you just want to write?

These are the questions you need to ask yourself.

I don't have alot of time for keyboard romeo's, you can learn more on a two week visit than you can reading a forum for two years, nothing in life is certain.

Thanks. For the search. This girl does have the same name. Anyway, I thought she might never email me again. That will be the end of my story. Actually I planned to visit her in Oct. Back in August, I made reservations for flights to Samara, Russia. Then I emailed her five time to inform her that I was in the process to get a Russian visa to see her. She didn't reply until Yesterday(9/29). Her explaination: the email cafe was shutted down since terroist attack. In the letter she did not mention anything about my visit or my suggestion. She simply ignored it. I do not know if I want to repond to her anymore. I cancelled my flights to Samara and changed my vacation plan to Cancun, Mexico. I will stay there for one week with my long time friend. I do not know what I should do with this girl. At least, I won't send anything to her.

If you do send money all that will happen is that the lady will take your money ,and leave you for the next willinmg victim : you will be left feeling stupid , humilated and resentful - you have been warned !!!

Flashing Eyes and I finally agree!

This is such an obvious scam that I'm actually embarrassed that a person of my gender is considering sending this person or group money.

Listen my friend, use the money you would have spent on her and take a trip to Russia and get an apartment for a couple weeks and while you're there, go to a local dating agency and meet some women in person. Be yourself, treat them with respect, tell the truth, and think positively. If she's like minded, she will respond in kind.

Don't let this experience turn you off or dissuade you.

This is a scam and the fact you don't see it only indicates your own loneliness and desperation and need to find someone and have a meaningful connection and relationship in your life. You need to do something to change that, like find someone for REAL.

I'm not cutting you down because I've been there too. In fact, most of us have been. Just evaluate yourself honestly and take steps to make things better for yourself and get a relationship for real. Stop all this wishful thinking nonsense. There's plenty of real women out there in the same boat as we all are: looking for someone to share their lives with.

these letters seem prewritten to me. Also my mom lives in Samara, it's a great city with more than 2 mln inhabitants... Also very wealthy with plenty of internet cafes and no terrorist attacks Just go there and try to get to know people. There are lots of universities with foreign languages departments. Lots of people speak English....

Another thing: why do you guys go to the angencies? If you want to find a geniune girl who speaks english and uses internet, serch on ICQ. Say Hello to the girls who meet your search criteria.... Go to local russian dating sites... There are e.mail addresses, ICQ, MSN available in every profile. Why are you buying those e.mail addresses? What is the point?
