Has anyone heard of Anelik ?

My girlfreind has suggested that instead of sending dollars by airmail I should use Anelik . I asked her what Anelik was and she said that her town has a bank where money could be transferred using the Anelik system.
It seems to be cheaper than Western Union ( WU charge 15% but Anelik charge 3%)
I tried to use the system but my bank needed a sort code and account number and my girlfriend has no account number and no bank accoount - she just uses her name and home address as the contact details which apparantly is how Anelik operates .
Has anyone heard of Anelik and has anyone used Anelik to send money to the fsu ?

No I have not heard of this.
Ya Western union is kinda high but thats what i do.
Its quick and fast and i just go to the grocery store to use it.
My time is money. I may save 20 dollars here and there with bank transfers or whatever but if it takes me an hour to go do this transfer then it simply is not worth my time.
Good luck with it though if it works for you.

Thanks lolomarseille,

Between credit card and WU charges, it costs me about $80 to send $500. I will look into this - free is good!

Why not use Ikobo...check out my post here

I have used WU many times but not again unless I absolutley have to, it is too expensive.

I read your post Chrismc, and have already emailed Tatiana about it to see what she thinks. Their rates are much more reasonable than WU. The reason I will check out BAN code is because I would also like to avoid the credit card cash fees (about $15 per transaction). Still, just using Ikobo, I could reduce the cost of sending $500 from about $80 to about $35, which is not unreasonable.

Thanks!

No problem, I plan on using it myself next time I have to send money somewhere. The reports I have heard about the service seem pretty good so far.

Hi -

Why not just open a free checking account (Washington Mutual or others), deposit the money and send her the ATM/Debit card via EMS with a PIN that you both agree on and not pay any transfer fees. ATMs (=Bankomat) is very common in most cities. This is what I've done and it has worked very well for the last 1 year+.

Bill

P.S. an aside to that1guy, $ 500 is a LOT of money for most FSU women!!! That's 2 months expenses for my Lady in Minsk...

I sent my lady a debit card. She saw me using mine when I was there and so she understands how it works and when she is on her way to me (hopefully very soon) she can use it anywhere along the way.
I agree with Minsk, 500 is a lot. I left my lady with 400 when I left and she has been able to quit her job and take full time english lessons. She also was able to get certified notarized copies of all of her documents, including police report and international passport. She told me that money should last her 2 months with all of the doc expenses included.

Hi Jag,

Good luck on your petition! I hope it goes very quickly for you. I expect ours will be submitted this week sometime. Tatiana has also quit her job (Sept. 1) to take English lessons full-time. She earns about $400/month, and the lessons are about $100/month, so this is how we arrived at the 500 per month figure. She owns her apartment, and I do not want her to lower her standard of living while we wait for the visa. Maybe the cost of living is higher their than in Minsk?

You said “she just uses her name and…….” which says to me that she is already using this service. I guess my question is if you are not sending her money through Anelik who is?
