Why would this NOT be a useful means of avoiding a scam? If it was handled as described in a prevous post, with a lawyer representing the womans interests, in her language, everything clear and notarized...why would such an agreement not carry weight in court?

I had the same thoughts. However, it sounds like a living trust will accomplish the same thing and is more discreet.
What is the minimum level of net assets that you want to protect? Remember, just because you live in a $350K house, that's not your net worth; you may owe $300K to the bank on it.
I'd say above $200K net assets is where a shark lawyer could possibly go after your assets.

It would depend on the court, and the laws of your country. I can give a few examples of things that make it less than useful in the USA:

-- Unless the woman choses, hires, and pays for the lawyer who represents her without your assistance, any lawyer can make a successful argument for 'conflict of interest'.

-- Most lawyers will claim that the foreign lawyer did not have the necessary expertise in the laws of your country. To defend this, you will now need testimony, affidavits, etc from a different country (and most likely certified translations) to prove otherwise.

-- In the US, even pre-nups give a limited protection for any assets acquired after the marriage takes place.

Now, avoiding a scam. Different scammers have different goals. I think very few are looking to take all of your assets. They may be looking for supplemental income (why leave their country and Russian boyfriend if you will send them money each month?), vacations to different cities/countries; or the magical golden pass (a green card) to the world's biggest commissary.

Offshore trusts & companies cost pennies & can render awesome services.
however do not shop through your onshore accountant&lawyer, who might be just too eager to rat you once revenue investigations might be due.
There are plenty of lawyers in Panama, Costa Rica, Nevis etc etc familiar with one's country legal requirements.
Remember the best moment to plan was three years ago & the next best moment is now.
Remember there are shark lawyers who elect to represent a woman for FREE, in exchange of a fat % of the "results".
There might be people countering this with emotional arguments over trustworthyness etc.
I just reply it takes TWO to form a couple & love is about two halves coming together.
If my bank account matters more, then i'd be better off at the next strip club.
As well, it's none of her business whether you own 3 or 33 villas.
