Hello Dear All,

1. You have discovered that one of your closest friends at work has stolen a large sum of money from the company. Would you do somehting? Go directly to an executive to report the incident? Confront the individual before taking action? Make contact with the individual with the goal of persyading that person to return the money ?

2. You have the opportunity to steal RM 500, 000 from your company with absolute certainty that you would not be detected or caught. Would you do it ?

IF you could, plss explain your answer .

Wow Lori... these sound like questions on the FBI Exam (Federal Bureau of Investigation) I took back around 1992! (Yes, I actually applied to become a Field Agent. Blame it on the movie "Point Break." Darn you, Keanu Reeves! )

Your question poses an ethical dilemma: Do you value your friendship above your own ethical determination of what is right and what is wrong? Do you enforce your own value of "right" and "wrong" upon others?

My answer to the first question is: Confront the individual to see if he/she will return the money. If not, then it must be reported. First, I have to say that I do not have any close friends capable of such actions. But assuming that I did, I would give them the first opportunity to correct the "wrong" action. ("Wrong" is defined by myself as an action that is inappropriate in the society in which you reside.) If they refuse, then I would provide an anonymous tip to management to report the loss.

My answer to the second question is: NO! In my ethical viewpoint, it is stealing and wrong. God's own commandments forbid such actions. ("Thou shalt not steal.") Besides the remarkably bad Karma you would bring upon yourself, the removal of this sum of money would impact someone else. There is never a true "victimless crime." Someone will need to pay for this loss. Whether someone will get fired from this theft, or the insurance company for the company will need to pay the company back (thereby raising it's fees and reducing gross profits for the company, and people get less raises, etc.)

Do you know someone that has participated in such actions? Or are you just curious?

Thinkers...

1) I would confront them. If they would not return the money, I don't honestly know if I would/could report them. I would certainly want to, but it would depend on the situation. Hate me for being honest if you must.

2) Absolutely NOT. Rtking summed up my thinking on this precisely.

Character means a lot in my book!!!!!!!! And I whole heartedly agree with Bob: "That which is done in secret shall be shouted from the rooftops". He who created the eye, can't he see?

Money that is rightfully and laboreously earned is always more sweet than fast bucks. That's why people who inherit money, or win the lottery usually have lost it all within five years. The numbers don't lie. I'd rather live a meager life and sleep well at night.

PS: Lori, don't all criminals in fact think that they "absolutely won't get detected or caught"? Prisons are full of them. There are no guarantees in life. Nobody would ever steal if they weren't sure that their plan would work. Write us from jail and let us know how things went.
