I have questions about Kyiv

Hi Everybody,

I have visited the wonderful city of Kiev on a couple of occasions, but these were both pretty brief visits of a week or two. I am thinking over going back again, and for a longer stay this time. But before making this decision, I have some questions about the city and I don't know where to find specific answers (I live in the U.S.). These questions are related to health care, and it's important that I find the answers before making the trip to Ukraine. I don't wish to be too specific on this board, but in general, my questions concern the availability of medicines in Kiev. If anyone of you could help me in finding answers on this subject, let me know.

Thanks for reading,
D.C.

I've lived in Kiev for about 2 1/2 years. What specifically? There is Western health care available but it is quite expensive (check and see if your insurance will cover it). There's an American Medical Center--clean with modern equipment. However, I went there once and, let me tell you, I will NEVER go there again!!!!! It is awful: they make you get lots of unnecessary test to run up your bill. I spent hundreds of dollars on tests just to be told that everything is negative and--guess what?--let's do more tests. No, thanks. Went to a Ukrainian doctor at a local clinic and within half an hour I was diagnosed and treatment was presecribed. Since he's on the state budget, it was free (but I slipped him a few bucks as a "tip").

Medicines are pretty widely available and generally you do not need a prescription to purchase them.

Thanks for answering, Jill. In my case, the medicine I would need is issued by prescription (I guess it would be the same in Ukraine), and is one I must take daily. If you care to know, its name is Phenytoin or Dilantin.

So besides being free, how did the Ukrainian doctor compare to doctors in this country?

I can't tell you 100%, but it is likely you can find the medicine you need. Is that the brand name, or the actual name of the medicine? Be sure to have the "real" name as often you will find it under a different brand name (e.g. from a European manufacturer).

My Ukrainian doctor was fine. He was recommended by a friend. The thing is, the clinic he works at has received a lot of USAID funding so it does have some modern (donated) equipment. He himself has also participated in professional exchanges and has been to the US on a USG funded program (so he has been exposed to Western medical practices).

If you go to a Ukrainian doctor BE SURE to go to one recommended by someone you trust. I have heard some bad stories of medical incompetence here.

About the medicine, Phenytoin is its actual name and Dilantin is a U.S. brand name. I think it's known by other brand names overseas, but my Web searches haven't turned up anything specific on its availability in Ukraine.

Chances are probably pretty good that you can find it. If I remember, I'll try to run by a drug store and ask if they carry it.
