WAC Speaker Programs: Putin's Labyrinth: Spies, Murder, and the Dark Heart of the New Russia Steve LeVine Author, Putin's Labyrinth Foreign Affairs Correspondent, BusinessWeek

Thu, 26 Jun, 2008 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

During the years of Vladimir Putin?s presidency in Russia, the nation saw authoritarian leadership that it had not experienced since the Soviet era. The murders of reporter Anna Politkovskaya, shot in the elevator of her apartment building, and KGB defector Alexander Litvinenko, suspiciously poisoned with a radioactive isotope, point to a possible return to totalitarianism ideals of the past. Tales of deception and corruption unfold in Steve LeVine?s new book, Putin?s Labyrinth: Spies, Murder, and the Dark Heart of the New Russia. He will join the Council to convey survivor and eyewitness accounts of the ?bloodshed that has stained Putin?s two terms as president.? Now that Putin?s formal reign has ended, and yet he still remains in control, LeVine views the democratic developments of the post-Soviet age as irrelevant. Does the showcase of military weaponry in the May 9 Victory Parade in Moscow ? the first display of such hardware since the Soviet collapse ? lend credence to this perspective? Even though the Russian people are today experiencing a drastically elevated standard of living, the government has moved to place broad constraints on their freedoms. LeVine examines this movement and investigates the renewed potential for hostilities with the West.

Steve LeVine is currently the chief foreign affairs correspondent for BusinessWeek. He has served as a foreign correspondent for eighteen years, writing for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Financial Times and other publications. He authored The Oil and the Glory: The Pursuit of Empire and Fortune on the Caspian Sea, which was named one of BusinessWeek?s Top Ten Books of 2007, and his new book, Putin?s Labyrinth, will be published June 24, 2008.
