Checkin the rest of the Eastern Bloc?

All of us have checked for potential mates in the FSU, and there have been a few that have looked in Romania?

Just wondering how many on the board have checked other Eastern Bloc countries, such as Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia, Bulgaria, etc.....

I went to so much trouble to learn Russian, I don't think I could figure out Hungarian....

Hungarian is a whole world in itself. At least if you know Russian, you can understand SOME of Polish, Serb, Croat, Czech, etc.....and can read Bulgarian......and some words in Romanian that don't match up with Russian can at least resemble Italian.

But Hungarian.......that is TOTALLY different than anything else that's out there.

The thing is, I figured that most of the people in these countries would understand Russian, but they probably don't have good memories of the Soviet years....

, no for me. I know a girl from Romania but I do not see her as a potential mate. Just share a fun sense of humour and chit chat from time to time on various things. I only count myself as checking out one potential mate in FSU which was from Ukraine.

no again to any of them, but I will say have keep in contact with a girl I know from Latvia that I like her looks and personality. Like learning a bit about her part of world and her teaching me a bit of Latvian but I never talked about meeting up. I think we just happy to talk with people from different part of world and learn a bit from each other. I have said to her though, if she was here in my country I would not hesitate to ask her out :-)

From what I can tell of all my communication with her , there is not much connection she feels with Russia or FSU. She knows no russian, in fact, I'm sure I know more than her but Latvia seems small country and small population so her language of Latvian does not seem much reason to learn unless you lived there and actually looks a lot harder to learn than russian anyway.

As an aussie living in a big land mass I'd love to one day just go on a driving holiday in eastern and central europe just like I can do in Australia. It would be fascinating to do for two or three months. Might do it one year in the aussie winter time with a girlfriend or some friends.

Russian was compulsory in Hungarian schools until 1989, and I doubt anyone has been interested in studying it since. You can get by pretty well in Hungary with German though. It has always been a popular tourist destination for Germans. Some of the younger folk speak English too as it grew rapidly in popularity after Russian fell out of favour.

I'm actually learning Hungarian at the moment as it's such an unusual language and I have vague plans to drag the missus to Budapest at some point in the future.

OK, I fall into an odd category I guess as I have dated someone from both the Czech Republic and Romania. Both of these women are currently in Houston as a result of different reasons. Klaudia from the Czech Republic is about 35 years old and has lived in Houston since she was 17. Her family crashed a gate some 20 years ago (defected) and they ended up here in the states. To say she has a unique perspective on life is an understatement. The other one from Romania (god help me if she ever reads this) is here as a student. She is much more of what you would expect from the Eastern Bloc. She is a fun person to be around and has a certain zest for life.

I have also been talking to a couple of Russian ladies that are here in town as well. The funny thing is that it seems that the ladies from the individual countries tend to treat each other with a bit of neglect or apathy. Not sure why that is.

I've had a professor from Hungary in the school, she's an immigrant that lives here and work in my University. She's able to speak besides Hungarian, German, Russian, English and Spanish in a vey impressive way.

Let's not forget that, many years ago, Austria and Hungary were once part of the same country.....and Austrians do speak German.
