My girlfriend wants to eat at a sushi restaurant when we stay in Moscow. We will be there about four days.
I am afraid of sushi in Moscow. How good is the distribution system for fresh fish?
Anyone have a clue?
Anyone eaten sushi in FSU?
My girlfriend has her heart set on sushi. I suspect going to a sushi restaurant may be a status symbol. It was here in the USA until just a few years ago when sushi bars finally made it into smaller cities.
I would appreciate any knowledge about sushi in russia and FSU countries.
Thanks

Hello Charles!
I ate at a sushi restaurant just 2 weeks ago in Moscow, no problems at all! As a matter of fact it is one of the best sushi places I've ever been to. Lots of different types of fresh fish and it tasted great. Too bad I can't remember the name of the place, but it was located on Tverskaya, a few hundred meters north-west of pushkin square.
And I agree with Myshka, the sushi places are more expensive than most of the other ones. But to be quite honest, paying for the meal was a pleasure because of the great food and service. And besides, compared to restaurant prices here, the prices in Moscow are a real bargain
(I think we payed about 2000 roubles for a big dinner for two including drinks)

Thanks for the information about Moscow sushi...
I would have thought that it would be necessary to be careful about eating raw fish in Russia (because our bodies aren't used to the different bacteria in Russia, not to mention to possible unclean silverware and contact with untreated water), but I'm happy that a few people had wonderful experiences with sushi in Moscow...
Since I am vegetarian, I actually enjoy vegetarian sushi (like avocado rolls, etc....)

I need to appreciate Nashville more. I get great sushi and drinks for two people here for $35. I need to practice my "that's not expensive" face.
Is anything cheaper in russia besides vodka?

Most everything in Russia is less expensive (or almost evenly priced) with what you will find in the West -- as long as you stay out of Moscow.
Moscow, being one of the most populated cities in the world (estimates vary, but for 2004 most agree it's well over 10M), also has some pretty high prices. It's also not driven as strictly by capitalism's laws of supply and demand, so the same goods can have widely varying prices.
Get out of the big city, and I have had a great dinner for 4 people, with two bottles of wine, dessert, coffee/tea, at a very nice café for under $65 USD. Try that at home! Afterward, the cab fare to get home is about $3 (to drop off the other couple, and then us).
I was once asked by my fiancee's mother what was cheaper in the US than in Russia. It took me almost a day to think of something. (International telephone calls).

Moscow is probably not the cheapest place in Russia ,
but you must remember that I'm comparing with the insane prices we have here in Scandinavia (I guess this is kinda important ).
But usually the price for two persons eating out at more regularly priced restaurants in Moscow would be something in the region of 500-600 roubles (atleast that was the average I paid, except for the sushi place ofcourse). But I think there is a good point to what Khashyar mentioned about "cleanliness". I would rather go to a place that my lady friend recommends and at the same time be sure that I get excellent food and service (and just bear the extra costs for this one special occation).

Just remembered the name of the sushi place we ate at:
"Planeta Sushi", located at 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya ul., 2.
I can highly recommend this place, the fish is great and they have some very good soups as well!

I have had sushi all over Russia and Ukraine. I've never had a problem with getting sick, even in landlocked out-of-the-way cities where a sensible person would have avoided sushi.
However, be forewarned that the most expensive sushi I've ever had was in Moscow. The first time was once when I had a simple lunch by myself. California roll, salmon sashimi, and miso soup....$65!! (This would be under $20 in California.)
The second time I was on a date and we went to some trendy place on Tverskaya with lots of chrome, blue lights, and DJ spinning trance music. We had a variety of sushi, a little sake, and a small dessert....over $200!!! It was a good date, though.

I guess it depends on where you buy sushi. I am not a sushi eater but my wife ate it once. It was a Japaneese place very close to the Zoo. It was horrible! My wife regretted eating it and worried all night. Luckily she did not get sick but was a little weezy.
Another story I will pass along which happened to someone I know has to do with raw oysters. This was in from what I understand a descent restaurant. He ordered a 1/2 dozen. Ate 5 of them and then looked down at his plate. Much to his dispair a LIVE WORM CAME WIGGLING OUT! He complained to the restaurant and he was told "Eta Normalle".(It is normal). He was in pretty bad shape for more than a week.
MY personal opinion...I would never eat any type of food like this in another country. People develop tolerences to different bacteria's etc. What the locals gulp down with no problem might make you sick as a dog!
