Pictures at Cemeteries?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

When I was in Ukraine recently, I went with some friends, who needed to put flowers(and, in this case, cookies)on top of the gravesite of family members.

Today I get an e-mail saying not to send pictures of the gravesites, or keep any for myself, as "it is against our traditions and customs". (Strange, since they didn't seem to have any objections when I was taking them).

And it certainly isn't an Orthodox thing, as it is the opposite situation in Greece(which has a much higher percentage of Orthodox Christians than Ukraine.) where photos are encouraged.

So, is it strictly a Ukrainian custom? Or does this apply to all FSU countries?

Just want to know so somebody doesn't get into any troubles in the future.

raspberry,
very intersting I have not been to Ukraine, but took a bunch of pictures when I was in Moscow at the Novodevichy Convent Cemetary where some notables like Boris Yeltsin, and many other famous Russian's are buried and posted a couple of these pictures in one of the threads (which one?) so I hope I did not break a tradition or custom. Wish I knew the answer now myself

When I was in Moscow took lots of photos inside the cemeteries, maybe it is her personal beliefs.

It's a personal superstition. Tanya says that there are no national or religious taboos about it. We took pictures of her Grandparents while we were there.

We placed his new headstone about a year ago. The old one was just a steel nameplate. Not a fitting tribute for a genuine hero from WWII. This man was in from the begining up to the end when he was on the way to Japan when Harry T dropped the bomb on Hiroshima.
