I am in Ukraine right now, and just got out of Kharkov. This has been part of another posting, but I thought I'd pass this along separately.

Not just once, but twice, I got pulled aside in Kharkov by militsia, and got my belongings searched. As I find out, there have been apparent cases of foreigners smuggling Marijuana into Kharkov.

So, if you look foreign, or don't speak the local langauges well, there is a chance where you may be pulled aside for a search and questioning.

Harkov police are notorious in Ukraine for corruption and abuse of power. Steer clear of them.

On the other hand, Crimean road police are similar.

Stirlitz, with that in mind, do you think the questioning about marijuana was only just an excuse, just so they can search me?

Thanks for the tip. I plan to be in Crimea, for at least part of the next trip.

Yep, I think it was an excuse. But beware, they may occasionally stuff it into your pocket and then ‘find’ it on you. Actually it is more of the Russian police ways but Harkov is very close to Russia and they are similar to it.
