I hope this is the right place to ask this. My Russian is very basic and I need help on telling a women who I have been in contact with for 4 letters that she is not right for me but I wish her well.

I tried to tell her in English but she does not understand me

What is a simple phrase to let them know we are not a good match?

That might work...but if you want something gentler...
"Thank you for taking the time to exchange emails with me. Although it may have been different if we met in person, right now, I feel that we do not have enough in common to continue a serious relationship. Wishing you the best of luck in your search for a man."

I can't say what I want to say in English since I tried (somewhat along the lines of what you said in English) to her but all I got is "I don't understand you" and "you still wish to communicate?"

My variant is:
Спасибо за твои усилия, время и письма мне. (Thanks for your efforts, time and letters to me). Я думаю, нам лучше прекратить переписку, потому что у нас не так много общего для продолжения серьезных отношений (I think we should better stop corresponding because we don't have enough in common to continue a serious relationship). Я желаю тебе удачи в поиске твоего мужчины (I wish you luck in your search for a man).

try the online translation at paralink.com you can use the back translation feature to make sure what you write makes sense. then you can send an email directly from there or copy and paste into an email from another account.

don't sweat it too much. just be courteous and appreciative.

Pinboy: Thank you. I've tried the back translation thing for other things but I worried something like breaking off contact with a women if mistranslated could be a disaster.

Be careful with online translators, and back translation is not a guarantee at all.
