A random question I would like some input on

Hello there guys,

I was talking to my girl tonight about what her limited work options would be for a while after coming here and I think I may have hit on a possible way for her to maybe make a few bucks while she is going to school here.

For you guys that used translation services at some point to communicate to your RW, what were you paying on a per letter basis, and do you think there is a possibility for someone like my girlfriend, a RW with good english ability to do freelance translation? Of course this is for those individuals who have obtained an actual email address outside of the dating agency. I know that a lot of the major dating sites offer translation services but would you have wanted to have access to a cheaper alternative or maybe even the option to ask questions of a RW about cultural issues, or simply for a RW opinion about things?

I see this being set-up through a pay-pal account where things could be paid for on a per letter basis, or whatever makes sense.

I'm just trying to see if this is feasible. It seemed like there could be a use for a service like this, but I'm not sure how great a need there is since I met my girl so quickly and with no major language issues ... any input would be appreciated.

Thanks guys...

Well it is worth a shot. There a few ways you could do it. She could do it all herself, set up a website, advertise, etc.... or join an existing website and they will pay her.

Another possibility is to give Russian or English lessons over the internet. There a few websites where the tutor gives lessons via Skype / Yahoo messenger; something like this.

Gives private Russian lessons via the local university. Or maybe helps people trying to learn English at a ESL school?

Quick thoughts.

Thanks for the feedback, out of curiosity, what is a good rate to charge for a translation? I never used any translation services available before so I have no real idea what is good/ not so good....

This is an area where, your future spouse can make some money to give her a feeling of contributing to the family/relationship. There are some posts on RMP of other members actually doing this type of work, I think you will find some of these posts in the "Russian Language' section but you may have to do some additional searching, some have their own websits, so I would 'google' this and do some additional research and I think you will get a feel for the going rates, if you do it, go into it with the thoughts that this is just to give your woman a 'sense of worth' of contributing, I would not look at it as a place to 'get rich quick', but it could grow into a nice enterprise

Here's a thread I started about finding work when she arrives. It has a lot of good ideas.

Thanks for the references GTR and Chili,

My GF is very apprehensive about being totally dependent on me while she is in school here. I can certainly understand and respect that. I know that this wouldn't be a huge amount of money, but as you said earlier, the ability to contribute something is important for self-esteem and well-being so I'm all for it.

I'll google and tried to find some websites that offer something like this and see if anyone is already making this work. She's excited at the prospect of being able to do something like this so I hope it is feasible to some degree.

Not to get into my awful past but as someone who has had to do all kinda of jobs to survive here are my ideas:

- Teach the elderly at senior centres about computers. yes the language barrier could be difficult but computers are another language anyways

- I used to return shopping carts back to the store that were scattered around town. I got 5 to 10 bucks for each one.

- Scrapbooking. I know people who take vacation pictures but dont have the time to put them in a book.

- Dog walking

I've got more ideas if you want.

Elena's site charges $10 per 1000 characters (including spaces) for "detailed" translation, or $5 per 1000 for "adequate"

Thats about $10 {or $5} for 200 words I would guess

A "first letter" of about 750 - 1000 words is about $30 - $45 for a good translation, roughly

Holy crap... I need to learn Russian and start doing this myself. Not to mention I could do it in my underwear....

On a serious note, what percentage would you guess of those using dating agencies use a translation service to some degree or another?

Damn! That makes global ladies sound like a bargain. When I was using them I went for the volumne deal. I think it worked out to $4 for 2500 characters at the time!

Depends on the quality too....

I think most of the guys would need a decent translation of the introductory letter at least....

I imagine a 2 - 3 page letter of 750 - 1000 words would take 4 - 5 hours or more to translate carefully, paying attention to grammar and such, + re-arranging to make it sound good in Russian.

Just a guess, but you might get better info from some of the girls here, at least a couple have worked as translators.

I saw the way letters were translated at my wife's agency. They would 1st run the letter through a translation program, then they would go over the letter correcting them. I very seriously doubt any agency is going to spend hours per letter.

Not pry too much in your situation, but what type of the higher educational institution is girlfriend attending (university, college, community/junior college, trade school) and what is her field of study? Many universities and colleges have on campus work program - answering telephone, light filing and data entry, receiving vistors, working in the library shelving books or helping to check out books etc. which exluded from green card rules - there is an enrollment requirement of so many credit. The work is usaully minimum wage or slightly above for 20 hours a week. Also, she might look into co-op experiences as she progresses in her studies where she spends a term (or summer) working in company in her area of education.

Yes I'm thinking along the same lines as disculmawsu. To begin with, I don't think you'll get much business and at those prices, I think you would get less business.

She needs something steady and meaningful even if it is minimum wage. If she wants her own business ... then try an E-Bay, making handycrafts and sell them at consignment shops, or take a class in manicure and work out of your house. All these jobs require the women to know little English also. I know your fiancee speaks English well Yeldarb but they would also be good for her.

My fiancee is a handycrafter and we have an old but huge building (24 floors) that has been renovated and they are turning it into a huge flea market!

Good luck and let us know how things turn out because we will have this problem eventually.

She'll be in an ESL school (English as a Second Language) and the schools are all small, typically 100 students or less, so working through the school itself doesn't represent much of an option because there just isn't much there to do due to the size. Attending school at an actual university would probably open up some doors because there are all kinds of support jobs that go along with the school like you are thinking, but it just isn't the case here...

And you are right, GTR, she simply wants to contribute, minimum wage or not doesn't really matter, and she knows that until she is done with school or we get married, her job options are limited. I like the ideas you all are throwing out, many of these we had not considered, so thanks!

And her degree was in international business. Currently she works in a bank, not sure if that sparks any more ideas from ya'll...

Thanks again.

Well if she works in a bank now, there is really nothing stopping her from finding a job in a bank in the US. On a scale of 1 to 10 what is her English level for speaking, writing, and comprehension. Do you live in an area where people might have a heavy accent? That will affect things. If she is willing to take a customer service type job there are plenty of options.

That is why they can offer lower prices.

Blues,

You can't legally work on an F1 (student) visa outside of the school. Sorry, I should have laid that out up front. We aren't getting married right away, maybe after living together for about a year if all is well and we both believe that the other person is everything we had hoped it would be. Obviously, after marriage, a bank job is definitely a possibility, or whatever she wants to do.

And I would put her english at an '8'. Certainly good enough to translate an introduction letter.

I'd just like to point out that Lena (you know the lovely lady who provides this site) also does translations and you may just run it by her if it is ok to overtly advertise this service let alone suggest it.

Posted by: BluesTraveler

My mis-understanding, I was thinking she was coming to the US on a K visa. Oh well... I think there are still plenty of opportunities for her to work online to hear some money.
