My Russian friend always pressed the 'up' button to bring the car to an upper floor rather than the 'down' button to tell the mechanism which direction she wished to go.
Do Russian lift/elevator controls work that way, or is it just my friend's quirk? She has little sense of direction BTW.

The first girl I met did this and the current one hits both up and down! It's probably one of those FSU superstitions!

I have seen elevators like this but most of them are smart enough to realize which direction to ride on their own

It is your friend. Although it is worth mentioning that many "small" elevators in Russia are not multi-call elevators. Which means that whoever presses the button first will get the car to their floor first. As opposed to bigger, newer elevators that will queue up the sequence of button presses.
