Kiev to Zaporozhye.

Can someone tell me if the train station and airport in Kiev are nearby?

I'm trying to book my flight and they can't seem to ticket the last leg from Kiev to Zaporozhye. The cost is about $150 with a four hour lay over.

I'm thinking that if I can catch a train I could travel the last 263 miles that way. Don't worry, I'm taking Russian lessons and should be able to swing the adventure of taking the train.

Thanks in advance,

Why don't you have your lady meet you in Kiev then you both can travel the last leg together? If you take a train then you will have some time to relax and talk, plus she will be able to make sure your on the right train and you don't get robbed on the ticket price since you are a Buckeye and all....LOL

Its about an hour or so away, $30 - $40 by taxi or there is a bus you can take.

i'd say it's only a 30-40 minute ride from airport to train station. if you try to get the taxi yourself, they'll gouge you. i like the idea of the woman meeting you in kiev and riding the train together. she can handle the train schedule and ticket purchase. depending on when you arrive, you may miss the train or have to wait a long time for it.

I likey the meet me in Kiev thing. I'll see how she feels about it.

Thanks guys. I know I can always count on you.

And if you decide to take a bus to Zaporozhye instead, be aware that there are three stations, and not just one main one.

Posted by: sidney

Trains have always been a good experience for me. You'll meet people, probably share food or drink. Sleep on a moving train is not easy for me though.

yes, the train can be enjoyable if you meet some nice people. i like that you can buy beer from the conductor or whatever he or she is called. you can also hop off at a stop and hit a kiosk for some drinks and snacks.

When I go to Omsk at the end of the year, my Lady will meet me in Moscow and we are taking a train to Omsk, 1st class on the train of course.

When I was stationed in Germany (Mainz) I used to choo choo all over the place. Mostly to Frankfurt just to walk around (yeh, and drink) Always had a good time. All you needed to know were the words for arrival and departure and you could get around pretty well.

I did the same thing in 99 or 2000 when I went to Pisa for a two week Air Guard working vacation. Took the bus to the train station and off to Florence the three of us went. We had a few missteps along the way that day, but still had a great day. Caught the last train back and the last bus to the Hotel.

If my girl can meet me in Kiev, well, I just know the ride to Zapo will be more than pleasant.

Talked to my new Russian teacher today and my lessons start Monday. I asked her to help me at least be able to travel a some and order food (as opposed to the owner) from a menu. She's got her work cut out with me, I can tell you that.

Posted by: Stirlitz

I suggest that you take a bus directly from the airport to Zaporoje. There are at least three buses, it takes about 9 hours and a ticket is UAH95.00. No need to go to Kiev.

Or I can give you a ride

Posted by: Buckeye5704

Think I'll ride with the lady, but thanks for the offer Igor. Sorry, I just suspect that she smells nicer, ya know what I mean?

Seriously though, wouldn't the train be faster than the bus? And I can still wait 4 hours for the plane to Zapo too.

43 DAYS!! WOOHOO!!

Actually the trains are notoriously slow....

Yup! You got it! If she's along for the ride with me I don't care how long it takes to get there. In fact we probably won't even notice. If there's a sleeping berth I'll spring for a private one.

And she smells nicer!

I knew another Buckeye would understand.

42 DAYS!!

My car is big enough to hold a small harem in the back seat

This is me sleeping in it. My bed at home is the same size.

Seriously too, there are five trains from Kiev to Zaporoje taking between 10 and 13 hours. But it does not include time needed to get to the train station from the airport while the bus runs through the airport. So it is much longer and tiresome with all the transfers (add taxi costs).

Well, I was hoping to avoid sitting around for 4 hours waiting for the 19.00 flight from Kiev to Zaporozhye, but it appears that is the fastest way to get there. I assume the flight is less than an hour for 265 air miles.

My scheduled itinerary has me traveling for about 15 or 16 hours to get to Kiev and I'm sure I'll be pretty beat. I might as well have a nap or a gallon or so of coffee, and take the plane.

Thanks,

Thanks,

In 2006 I had a 9 hour lay over in Moscow before catching my domestic flight to Arkhangelsk, I thought this would be unbearable, but in all it was not too bad, was able to observe the people, and try some of my very limited Russian, half-way thru the layover, an older Ukrainian women sat next to me who has been living in Seattle? the last 9 years and was visiting some friends/relatives, so we struck up a conversation and she gave me a lot of useful info and help.
So 4 hours may seem long but it really will not be when that time arrives

I took the bus once - never again! It's a long uncomfortable ride. The train is better because you can lie down & rest or get up and walk around {small cafe on most trains}

However if you can't get someone {trustworthy!} to meet you at the airport, I would advise you to spring for the flight. To get a taxi to Kiev, the hassle of buing a ticket on the train will be far worse. I speak fairly good Russian, I had very few problems EXCEPT at the train stations. The workers at the ticket window were rude and difficult to understand, people pushing in front of you when they see you are a foreigner, and when there is a problem {computer system down, train sold out etc} you won't be able to understand them.

Posted by: Buckeye5704

Thanks everyone for all the help. I think I'm gonna hang out at the airport and catch the 19.00 to Zaporozhye. Maybe I will arrive somewhat fresh. I'll definately be in a perfect mood, as my lady puts it, when I step off the plane and see her standing there.

40 DYEN TO GO!!

Hey Tim do you have anybody to help you out in Ukraine? How well does your girl speak English?

I will arrive in Kiev a couple of days before you, {going to Crimea} you can contact me if you need some help.

Posted by: Buckeye5704

Her english is great and I'm starting Russian lessons tomorrow. We're gonna hang out in Zaporozhye for a couple days while she shows me the sights there then I'm renting a car and she's driving me to Crimea for our little holiday. Hmm, could this be a shadow of things to come? I pay, she drives?

She still won't say where in Crimea she's taking me either the little pistol. I know mum lives there too and she will only tell me "it's the most romantic place I know of, it should be unforgetable." I'm pretty sure that's a given regardless of what happens there.

May 23 is just 40 DAYS away!!!

Yes, indeed...in most cities, the bus stations are nowhere near the airports.

My friend did take a bus to Eastern Ukraine, from Kiev and it was a really nice one. Had air conditioning, videos, and even an attendant. The question is, whether this kind of bus is available between Kiev and Zaoprozhye?

Urrrgh…

One of the zillion reasons I gave up trains for good. Car, bus… plane… but no bloody train.

I f you will drive at all make sure to get your international drivers licence! I got stopped and had to pay a hefty bribe because I didn't have one.

When I flown to Ukraine.I flown into Kiev than take a flight to DNK and Sveta called a friend to pick me up from the airport there it a nice ride into town. Its cheaper and a faster. I got to the apt around 6pm and i think the flight would of got there around 8pm. Zap is a international airport and i think there is a flight coming from Austria so it might be a nice lay over.

There is an answer to the question above:

Buckeye, why don't you both check into a hotel in Kiev and you won't have to worry about a train, bus, or anything else.

Posted by: Buckeye5704

Too far to bring her 7 y/o son and I don't blame her at all. In fact I wouldn't let her do it. I wouldn't drag my baby 9 + hours each way for her. That's 18 + hours and more travel time than I'll have. I'm gonna be beat and there's no point in all three of us getting grumpy the first night we lay eyeballs on each other.

No, I'm catching the 7pm flight to Zap, I'll be there at 8 and she'll be there with a nice hug and a big smile waiting for me. She can help me get into my room and we'll start fresh on Saturday.

I'm cool with that.

39 DAYS!!!! YEEHAW!

Good plan, I think this works out best for all involved, and shows you are thinking of her and her child also, I would expect a VERY BIG HUG in Zap don't forget the flowers frflowr:

I hope you read up on all the stuff about Ukraine...

One thing to do is to call your bank and tell them you will be overseas. The ATM cards work fine there, but it's a hassle if your bank thinks your card is stolen and shuts it off. If you are use to just charging most things on a credit card (as I do over here) most places there will not take them (except maybe some hotels)

I would also suggest that you get a 12 volt inverter, I used it in the car to charge the laptop, my razor etc.

Zap does have its own airport(OZH), but I don't know of any scheduled international flights of any kind flying there, but there may be charters. I only know of people taking domestic flights into Kiev, or go into the next closest airport(DNK-Dnepropetrovsk)and take ground transportation.

Speaking of electricity, please note that the prongs Ukrainian appliances are usually smaller than the ones in Europe---even though it is still 220v. So the plug for your 220v iron/hairdryer/etc. that you used in Germany may not fit in the socket. Fortunately, there are "flea market" type places in most major Ukrainian cities where you can get the right plugs to make it work.

Posted by: Buckeye5704

Thanks for all the ideas guys. My Gillette will work anywhere. I'm bringing a 220 power adaptor with several plug adaptors for the laptop. I'll be sure to look for the smaller size. Does anyone (Igor?) know the size in metric? Maybe radio shack will have it.

Helen actually suggested DNK and offered to meet me there, but I just wanna get to Zap and collect my first (of many) huggie/kissies.

I WILL NOT FORGET THE FLOWERS! That is a top priority.

37 DAYS!

Posted by: Stirlitz

Local plugs are very similar to European ones but they are thinner. The distance between the pins is the same but the pins are narrower in diameter. As a result, European plugs may not fit in local sockets. However, European plugs and sockets are gradually replacing Soviet standards so chances are better. Usually foreigners do not have trouble using European plugs because apartments or hotels they stay in are all renovated with modern facilities including electricity.
