Russian shoes

I keep reading that Russians walk everywhere, and that they don't wear athletic shoes while they do it. Are their "hard shoes" any more comfortable than ours, or are the Russians just more impervious to pain? Has anyone here tried Russian shoes? I don't want to stick out as an American with my white Nike's when I go over, but my flat feet won't take much walking in hard shoes--not even rubber sole Redwings. It might be worthwhile making a quick stop at a shoe store shortly after arriving?

This is a serious question. I'm not just looking for an excuse to go shoe shopping in the FSU. Really. My feet hurt already.

Firstly I would ask, can you not buy black athletic shoes?

Secondly, I have worn white sports shoes (Reebok's) over there without attracting any glares i could discern and my lady did not bat an eyelid about me wearing them.

However it depends on both where you are going and the season.

Wearing white shoes in winter would be viewed as a bit daft simply because they would get dirty so quickly.

Your other alternative would be to buy black leather shoes like Hush Puppies which are more comfortable than standard.

Be aware you may need to wear some type of dress shoe to go out and some restaraunts/clubs may refuse entry if you are in sports shoes.

Dave,

I honestly do not know the scoop on Russian shoes or their threshold for pain. But I do know a little bit about comfort footware. I have experienced foot problems (podiatrist says from poor choice of shoes in the past) There are a number of place's to get the "dressier" type footware that do not hurt your feet. They are as you would imagine much more pricey but take my word for it. They are worth it. I prefer the Seibel's here is a link:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/C/6015147...?origin=leftnav
for what it's worth I also use an arch support insert and my problems has for the most part dissipated. I can now walk extensive distances for extended times with no pain at all. It is all about the shoe.

Posted by: deccie

Also be aware you will be asked to wear some type of "house shoe" which will be slippers. If you have sensitive feet - best buy a pair now you like and take with you.

Posted by: BluesTraveler

Most of the shoes I saw where cheap Chinese shoes. I couldn't imagine them being comfortable. Hmmm....maybe this explains why Russian men always have a scowl on their face. Combination of uncomfortable shoes making their feet tired at the end of the day, and uncomfortable beds where you can't get a good nights sleep. I think I would have a scowl on my face too.

Dave get a pair of black tennies and you'll fit in about 90% of the time. Dress shoes for an evening out. If you don't have any fancy ones have her help you select some there. Let her have her way with you! LOL, No not that way.... The shoes man the shoes...

I bought some shoes in Moscow (Kievskaya Station market), comfy, but fell apart after only a few months; not well made.

LOL, I was just talking to my Lady on this subject today. She wears tennis shoes allot doing everyday stuff, but usually they are of a wild color (pink, green, purple etc). I asked her about white ones (usually the color I wear) she said that people in Omsk wear all colors, including white.

Posted by: mistermopar

Ok...
I just walk home from work,20 minute walk in my noncomfortable Russian shoes.I wear them because it does not look good wearing running shoes with dress clothes.

Running shoes no matter what the colour is,you won't be noticed for them.
I see people hear wearing white, red, blue and what ever other colour you can imagine.
I have white runners and never get looked at for them when I am wearing jeans.
What they do notice on me is my grey leather jacket,95% have black here and some brown, but not light grey....

It'll amaze you the distances the women walk in high heels. I've never worn them but I can't think they'd been all that comfortable. My wife wears them alot and hasn't developed any problems or even complaints.

Walking? You should see a Russian dancer dance in 4" heels. The owner of my dance studio is from Moscow, is only like 5 feet nothing tall and wears 4" heels, the way she spins in them I wonder how she ever kept from breaking something.

at your local rack room shoes, or similar store, check out the all black new balance sneakers. they don't stand out like white sneakers, are quite comfortable, and cost only about $50. i put many, many miles on a pair last summer during my nine weeks in ukraine.

Hey Pinboy,hows it going?

Is it differant in the Ukraine? In Moscow and Volgograd white shoes do not stand out...at all.I can buy the same white shoes here as what I brought with me...Reebok.
Now my first trip to Russia in 1999 my white shoes did stand out a little..

from what i saw, yes the typical western "tennis shoe" would still stand out in just about most places.

all is well here. glad to see you've surfaced again. i give you a lot of credit for doing what you did. remember, if you throw enough at the wall something sticks!

Hey Pinboy, good to hear from you.

From what I see in Russia, western shoes would not stand out.Everyone is wearing Nike,Reebok,Addidas and other western shoes here.
It is just like being back home.
The only differance I see is there are more people wearing dress shoes.
But still runners are not odd.

Thanks guys, I must have been reading some old threads. I kept reading that white tennis shoes made you stand out as an American. I would prefer to blend in as much as possible.

Let me try to head off my next potential fashion faux paux: White Nike's with khaki's (or even dark trousers) and a blue blazer? I've seen this enough over here that I don't think it looks goofy anymore, but again, I don't want draw attention to myself as a foreigner (and especially one with no fashion sense!).

New Balance?! I tried a pair. I think they make the soles from bricks.

Dave,in Volgograd I do not even notice the foreigners any more.I am always guessing.
I had a man from Germany over hear me speaking in English and ask where I was from and if I was on holidays here. When I said I lived here he was surprised.

I was told by my Lady in Omsk that Nike's or any other type of sports shoes are usually worn with jeans or shorts in the summer, usually not with dress pants. Personally I would think it would look rather goofy myself.

Whats the deal with Ukrainians/Russians and their pointy shoes?

I'll tell you why! because that's all they sell in the bloody shops here, for women too I must have been in dozens of shoes shops this last few weeks and I didn't see any shoes with anything that closely resembled a blunt end

At my wedding, everyone to a man had pointy shoes, I asked Irena if it because they all had funny shaped feet but she said no daaarlink, that is the fashion, I will delve a little deeper and see what is really behind the pointy shoe phenomenon

They make different types with different attributes (lightweight, heavily cushioned etc.), so those may not have been the ones Pin Boy was describing.

Chris, that is my same experience when I was in Arkhangelsk, even the men were wearing pointy shoes, of course they were all dressed in at least sport coats so I thought it was more of the fashion of being dressed up. I did not ask the question (did not want to take the chance of offending anyone-1st visit) but I feel it goes back to the time of the Cossacks and their wearing those weired long pointy curled shoes, like this fashion is just a reflection of their past, a little sense of partriotism, maybe a little pride and wanting to be a little different from the rest of the world

Ok guys,
I took a photo of my students shoes last week so people can see the differance between Russian and North American foot wear.

They look like normal shoes to me, was there a trick question to this post that I missed?

HAHA....no,notrick question here.
It is that so many new comers think Russian people wear much differant shoes than we do.I thought I would put the pic so people could see there are many now that wear the same as we do.

Randy

Posted by: Chrismc

Not many pointy ones there, but yet you go in the shops and there are thousands oif them, however, I suspect the reason is that those are students in casual wear, I doubt they wear those when they are going somewhere special or out with friends etc. I think the good old pointy ones will put in an appearance then

Posted by: mistermopar

Yes people still wear pointy shoes here.
But for people coming over for the first time they will not stand out in a crowd,a lot of Russians wear the same.

Randy

Thanks MisterMopar, it sounds like the key is to match the shoes to the rest of the attire--sneakers with jeans or shorts, dress shoes with dress pants. I'm still not sure about what goes with khaki's though, I never thought of them as anything other than casual.

I think you would be able to get away with wearing runners or dress shoes with the khaki's here.

I wear a pair of tan deck shoes with my khaki's, they are casual yet more dressy than sneakers.

Ah, you crazy Americans, matching your shoes to your pants - in England we'd never do that.

Unless, of course, they are Superman pants and shoes sets

But being serious, can you really get y-front shoes?
