I am preparing to go to Ukraine to meet my girl soon and if all goes well I just might decide to stay there.

My question is; has anyone done this already? And if so what hoops had to be jumped through (and palms greased) to make it happen?

If I go over on a 6 month travel visa, can I apply for something more permanent after I get there?

Thanks,
Tim

You're jumping the gun big time and setting yourself up for a big time fall.
Take some time for a couple of trips to meet the lady and see some of the country. You'll see that things are the same but different and that twist will take some getting used to. You're not in Kansas anymore Dorthy!

Are you not jumping the gun here? You only started talking to your lady on the phone a couple of weeks ago and you are already starting to think and look into staying in Ukraine. Maybe you should slow down just a bit and try not to fall in love with an email, a picture, web cam shot, or a voice on the phone I know its hard, but you havn't even met here face to face yet and according to your earlier posts will not meet until July at the earliest.

Buckeye, if it feels right stay over there with her. Sometimes you have to follow your gut.

Thanks guys,

I keep saying though that I'm going anyway. Whether it's with her or someone else or alone, I'm going over to see the sights and hang out for awhile. Six months, a year, two years, whatever. I do hope that things work out with her and I, but if not I'm still planning on hangin around for awhile, cause I can.

Yes,I really like the lady a ton, but I'm not some love sick puppy who thinks things will be all hunky dorry when I step off the plane and into this fairy tale life.

Eto panyAtno?

don't know of anyone who is over for an extended stay in the Ukraine, but "mistermopar" is over teaching english in Russia (Volgograd), and bingism is also in Russia I believe teaching english as well. "mistermopar" is more active on this site with has a active thread he responds to, you might ask him a few questions, even though he is not in the Ukraine, the info he could give might be very valuable.

Bing has been in Ufa 18 months now, I actually met him over there last March, he has gone through some hard times but is now finding his feet and is getting married soon. He doesn't visit here anymore, but we email each other from time to time.

I am sure he won't mind me telling yu, there are times when he probably thought it was the worst decision he ever made, but now he has a good job and found his life mate, soon to be his wife he is doing fine.

Randy has been over there a while now and looks to be doing great. If I could I would also spend extended times here, I have been over 4 times for 3 weeks at a time in the last 12 months but I would be happy living here for 6 months of the year if circumstances were right. This trip along with getting married I am discussing business ventures with Irenas family, so wo knows, in a few years I may well find myself living here, it is certainly not out of the question and I coud think of far worse places to stay.

Thanks Bob & Chris.

Chris if you could have Bing drop me a line sometime, I'd love to pick his brain a little bit. I promise to leave most of it untouched though.

I'll try to pm randy and get his personal thoughts on it too.

I know it'll be very different from what I know here at home, but then I stop and think about what we are asking our potential brides to do as well. They are willing to leave their entire lives behind to be with their soul mate. I figure that I have far fewer roots to cut, but I still know there are many things I will miss.

Still, to return to Europe, and to see a part of it that was strictly forbidden to me when I was in the Army in Germany, has been a long time dream of mine. The potential of finding my life mate at the same time is honey to sweeten the pot.

I lived in Kiev for several years.....However, I worked there and the company I worked for took care of all the paperwork. That's probably the easiest way to do it.
