Trying to call a mobile in Ekaterinaberg, unsuccessfully.

I have a friend who lives in Ekaterinaberg, we have chatted on cam I have sent her flowers and small presents but I have never been able to call her. I have done some research and found that if the Mobile providers do not have an agreement with each other then we cannot call each other. I dont understand the reasoning and nor do I want to I just want to call this lady and hear her voice and let her hear mine.

I was thinking if I could find out who her provider is I could find out who they have an agreement with in Australia so I could get a SIM for a provider that will let me call her. I have tried to ask her recently, after I got her number and worked out what the problem was who her provider is but we haven't had much of a chance to chat so I was hoping you might be able to help me out a bit.

I use Optus Pre-Paid and as I said I dont know her provider but her number goes +7 908 XXX XXXX. Ihave heard that you can tell a service provider by the prefix so I am hoping someone can tell me who has this prefix in Ekaterinaberg so I can figure a way to call this lady.

To pre-empt the obvious question, yes she is legit.

Nope, but I might have to give it a go. Thanks buddy

Having said that I would still like to call A whenever I feel like it and I cant do that with Skype from work, methinks my employer (the NSW government) would take a dimm view of it

OGL

Why don't you just use a landline to call her and if you go through one of the cheap rate access numbers then it shouldn't cost too much to ring a mobile even.

I was thinking the same thing, I try to use my land line as much as possible. Much better connection that way. It's generally a crap shoot trying to get a good connection mobile to mobile.

908 is Beeline.
I was reading in another thread that someone was having trouble sending SMS's recently I think it was GentleGiant. By the way Beeline just changed their mobile phone prefixes around on January 1st. MTS did a bunch of changes too. I am wondering if this is why people are having problems calling and sending SMS's. I saw a posting on RedTape forum about it, but can't find it again, or the details.

I would use Skype or a pre-paid phone card, you should be able to use the pre-paid phone card with your mobile phone, Yes?

Is anyone having trouble receiving SMS's here in the US from Russia? When my Lady tries to send me one, she gets a message saying "SMS's to US are forbidden" or something like that. She even tried using her cousins phone that regularly sends SMS's to Australia successfully, no go on one to the US. Same message.

There has been alot of change in Russia regarding telephone numbers. Another friend from Moscow gave me her new number today after I tried to call her for womans day with no success because her number had changed.

Yeah I will us skype but, and this is why I started the thread, I dont always have a landline or internet access with me but I always have my mobile. As for using a prepaid card on the mobile I have tried that here in my town but the local number wont work with mobile or payphones, something to do with private numbers not being allowed. They will get you anyway they can.

My take on the changes on the phone numbers is that they are re-doing the area codes / pre-fix codes. They don't have enough allocated for all the mobile phone numbers. They are re-doing them so that all the mobile phone companies can get a new block of numbers.

OGL: Crazy Aussie phones! There must be a phone card company that will have a toll-free number that you can dial in to. Sure it will cost more, but hey, what are you going to do?

It is my thread about calling my GF; but it is not just sms. I have not managed to speak to her in weeks; calls either dont go through, get a fake ringing tone, or get cut off as soon as she tries to answer.
I am waiting impatiently for her to get an adsl enabled phone line fitted and activated at her new office.
A lot of my sms woes are being caused at my end;Orange deny there is a problem, but texts within the UK dont have any problems and if I drive to Worcester I dont have any problems sending to her.
While mentioning Orange, I would like to say happy birthday to my sisters fault report ticket, which will be a year old in two weeks time; she is STILL waiting for an engineer to show up.

There is another alternative if you have a decent phone. (e.g. high end Nokia.)

It is possible to place vo-ip calls via your handset, especially via handsets like a Nokia N95 that have their own wireless card in them. I have one of these BTW)

Skype will run on some Nokia's as does another program called fring. Sometimes you can combine the vo-ip and the gprs modem capability of the phone.

I have not tried this but I have a friend who does and he says it works well for him and is much cheaper than actually using the normal phone service.

A google search for Nokia, vo-ip, skype and fring should bring up enough information to keep you busy.

Yeah thats if you have a landline, with you. I cant call toll free on my mobile, there is always the standard mobile call costs.

Thanks buddy.

I'll look into all this tomorrow but I have to say if the price is a bit high for a phone that can do this I'll just have to wait till I save some more pennies.

Sorry, that should have read "It is IN my thread about calling my GF"; I was writing on my laptop and sometimes I dont push the keys hard enough because the keyboard flexes so much i worry about breaking it!!

It has been over 4 weeks now since we have managed to talk; I got through twice the other night and we got cut off before she even managed to finish the "H" in Hello.

ADSL should have been working by now, but she is still waiting for the line to be installed.
