International womans day

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: sidney

This is a first for us in that we've been invited to a party for international womans day. Has anyone else been to one of these parties? It is with some RW my wife has befriended that live about 1 1/2 hours drive away. I would guess there will be some serious drinking it least that has been the case with other russian parties and possibly games. There will be about 20 people there. Not sure if there are any others from near where I live. The only one on RMP from this area, Fern Glen, is pinboy. I may meet him at one of these when he finds a keeper.

How did everyone get there BD on international womans day?
It least your betterhalf should have an easy way to remember your BD.
Yes it is important to RW and a day you best not forget to get flowers.
I can't find any cards for this day at any of the local card shops so it must be more important in russia then america.
I have an easy way to rember my wife's BD since it is 2 weeks after mine.

I have yet to meet an AW who is aware of this day. Now Valentine's Day - that is a different story.

Thanks for the card Lester!
I know of a lady that will enjoy it!

Posted by: sidney

Lester, your the man. Thanks

What a party. Many detoured around the food and headed for the vodka. Good time was had by all. Met many interesting people unfortunately far from where we live. If I counted correctly there were 30+ in attendance. The girls enjoyed dancing. There were a few games. They alway seem to like musical chairs it least at most of the russian parties I've attended. It was almost all AM/RW. If you ever have opportunity to attend an international womans day party go for it. Everyone had such a good time that they were already planning one for next year.

My brother's birthday is also March 8th!

I hope you had a Happy Birthday Chrismc and goforit!

LOL! I can't believe all you guys have the same birthday as me!

At my wife's suggestion...we do not celebrate Woman's day...Valentines day took it's place. LOL! It's 3 weeks sooner!

And she didn't want to celebrate both of them? Hang on to this one then. I sent flowers to my Lady in Omsk on both days just to cover my ass I also sent a single Rose to her daughter on woman's day so she could feel included in this adventure, plus, it made her feel speacial since no one else in her class received any flowers

Posted by: GoingToRussia

I sent flowers for her on her birthday and Valentine's Day. She said she wants to use the money for Woman's Day flowers on clothes she needs! Sounds good to me because I'm going to have to buy her clothes anyway.

It is pretty well known here in Australia now. They have Woman's Day events for it with speakers and all talking to Women and men who will go along and listen discussing important issues of the day for women.

As far as romanticism goes Valentines Day is the big one here, Womans Day is more of a day for awareness of social issues.

My ex and my daughters do not even have a clue this day even exists (Women's Day). I myself only found out about it a couple of years ago when I first started searching for a FSU woman. The other day besides Valentines and Mother's day where I am at in the midwest, that is becoming somewhat important (but not as important as Valentines day) is "Sweetest Day" another one of those Hallmark generated days to increase sales

Tanya invited a few of her friends out for dinner at a local restraunt. Included was a couple of friends of her friends. I showed up after a bit and presented them all with a single rose and congratulated them on womens day. I did give the balance of the roses to my lady. (LOL, an odd number!) I was wearing my new "I Love Ukrainian Girls" T shirt. It went over well. But after I left one of the 'new' gals started ragging about Ukraine and how the famine of the 30's was faked and about how Ukraine was pulling away from 'Mother Russia'. Tanya told her what her grandfather said about the people starving to death and being shot for 'hoarding' food.
No joke! A neighbor had saved several liters of honey and burried it. They were found out and shot.

Posted by: BluesTraveler

I was in Safeway (west coast supermarket chain) last week and they did a PA announcement about buying flowers for Woman's Day. I was absolutely stunned. But then I thought about it and realized oh ya, there is a huge FSU population in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and there are plenty of Safeways in California. Makes sense. At least someone is paying attention to their local communities.

AkMike, regarding the food shortage famine of the 30's, which was also a problem of food shortages and long lines in the 80's as well.
was this girl from Russia? with a little bitterness against Ukraine (possible Russian indoctrination/propaganda of the truth?) , or was she born in America and just uneducated?

Posted by: AkMike

She was from Sakalin Island(sp) in Russia. I don't understand it but it's happened several times here. Other women will look down their noses at Tanya just because she's from Ukraine. No chance to get to know what kind of a person she is just that she's from Ukraine is enough reason.
I now have an idea how blacks must have felt like back when...
One woman said that and she owned a russian book/video store. And said that when we were within ear shot..
Funny but we never went back and the store folded shortly after. No loss.

Posted by: Stirlitz

What’s funny, the International Women’s Day is marked almost exclusively in the FSU Very international. Duh

Posted by: BluesTraveler

Stirlitz: Actually Woman's day is almost completely unknown in the US. The big day in the US is Mother's day.
Side note, Japan has Boy's Day and Girl's Day.

I had read somewhere on the internet about this "jealousy" by women of Ukrainian and Russian origin that had have been living over here for years towards FSU women who have come over here through marriage like "T" has. With this mindset that "T" was given a golden spoon and that she has had it easy, does not have to work, (you know after all she married a rich american) and all that other BS. I alos think it might have been discussed as well in one of the threads. I do not know of course in truth if this is why they are acting that way but it is a very petty and childish way to act, and I am sure you are very proud of the way "T" handels it and acts, but you probably want to take a baseball bat up side their ignorant heads

No it really seems to be a Russia VS Ukraine thing.. Not old, been here VS newbie with her feet still wet...

Interesting, do you think these feelings developed after the fall of the Soviets and breaking away of the different nations, or do you think this goes back much futher then this, that lets say for a lack of a better word the "animosty" has always been there between the Russians and the Ukrainians.
I had heard that east part of Ukraine the nationals did not like the Russians but west of the river (name?) that the Ukraine nationals were more friendly with Russians, I just thought this was due to the fact that the border was much closer and that some of the hard feelings on the Ukraines part was due to recent current events like the winter of 2006 when Russian shut down part of the gas supply to Ukraine.
And I know from your post that it is not "T" who has the "problem" but these Russian woman that are starting the Ruckus

Posted by: AkMike

I have a hunch it goes back much further than 2006. I'll talk to Tanya about it and get her input.

Its the opposite way round Chilli, Eastern Ukraine was always attached to Russia and they speak more Russian, whereas Western Ukraine was on its own, and mostly speak Ukrainian, when the Soviets invaded WU in the 30's/40's that is when things took a turn for the worse.

I can tell you some pretty harrowing stories of times back then that my Fiances parents had to endure, they make your toes curl

Well it has been known here for years but has only come into flavour since the fall of the iron curtain.

I cant speak for everyone but here at least in Australia when the iron curtain come down many things that were Soviet style ideals become popular. Our only problem with Communism here in Australia was really our politicians who ran a fear campaign so automatically everything that the Soviets did was a bad thing. After the Soviet Union disintegrated there was nothing to fear anymore so we could embrace the social aspects of their culture and put our own spin on it.

I agree Chris. I have been chatting to a young lady for about 3 years now, we are great friends (thats all). She has told me bits and pieces of what she knows about her family who originally come from Ukraine and were forcefully transported into Russia, I cant remember the exact location but I think it was near the border of Kazakhstan somewhere.

They were hard times for everyone but even more so if you were targeted by the authorities, and you could be targeted just because you were a certain ethnicity (Kirim Tatars, many of whom still have not been able to return home to the Crimea) or had any influence (Kulaks, most killed or put in labour camps) or special ability.

Posted by: Chrismc

Yes OGL it was very harrowing times for most people over there. Most won't talk about it now, but they don't forget.

OzGuyLooking,
the fear (in USA) did not completely leave when the Iron curtain came down, Just take a close look at "Bush" and everyone associated with Bush, he IMO has a real paranioa not only with "terrioists" lurking behind every closed door, but still with Russia

sorry a very bad case of dyslexia, I completely reversed the entire country, east is west and west is east. Now if I can figure out what is North and what is South I might be able to figure out what side of the Civil War I was on

I have to ask, what is "noggieing"? I have an idea, but I want to hear your definition, never heard that word before.

noggie-noggie, something we (my buddies and I) would say as youths when refering to getting very intimate with a girl. another was "bookie-bookie" as in we were doing the "bookie-bookie" the girls would all laugh because they knew what we were talking about

Yes it was and I must say that I felt honoured when I was told a few things that happened because as you say it isn't something that is spoken about with people who weren't there. It shows trust when people discuss such things. The old people know I know about it and are ok with it, but I would never broach the subject with anyone but the person I chat to.

The fear didn't completely leave here either Chillidog, we still have some people who consider themselves the peoples politicians but all they are is racist scare mongerers. The aussies will instantly know who I mean.

Chillidog, I admire your desire to learn everything about the people and cultures of the FSU but wanting to leave the toe curling out simply isn't an option if you really want to know why the people are like they are.

Yes exactly how I felt and feel too, I only discuss these things if they start the conversation, my fiance rarely talks about such things, but now and again she feels like saying something or telling me about her personal and her parents experiences. But I don't push the subject because it upsets her too much.

People can find out about this type of stuff, they can read about it in many places, but it is best to try and learn it on the ground, from first hand experiences, if people are willing to discuss such matters. Some will, most won't, it depends on if they trust you or not and how close to them you are.

Trust is the big thing, if they trust you and accept you as an important part of their world they will talk about anything when it is appropriate to discuss it.

Chris & OGL, I agree on not being able to leave the toe curling out of it, in wanting to know and understand a person's culture,it is their history, not much if any of their history has entered main stream education in the west, yes there are bits and pieces, and we can just by reading between the lines understand some more but, Their beliefs, the way they view life, which no matter what anyone says is based heavly on their enviroment and history of their country, and these events. My comment which I am sure you understood was just to try and lighten the mood. I could not agree with you more when you wrote about how the older relatives would talk about the past in your presence (which did show thier trust in you) and how you would not even brooch this subject with them unless they were first willing to talk about it.

So to learn little items like you speak of is invaluble, their history whether they are Russian or Ukraine is to me very interesting, anything I can learn, I hope will give me a better feeling and insight to them as people in general, and in a marital relationship in particular.

Hi everyone.
I've been busy so I wasn't be able to send this earlier.
I had a nice dinner with some of my friends. These are women that live in Anchorage and came from Russia, Belorussia,Ukrane.
And this time I had the best present I've ever had in my life. Mike came for a few minutes in to the restaurant and brought roses for every girl, but the most importent part of the present was his T-shirt! Look...
I was so proud of my Mike!

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Love the photo!!!! You are just beamimg!!!! I can tell you're very happy!

Way to go Mike! You know how to please the ladies!

they are from FSU... they use smiles sparingly... I think it is a trait passed on in recent generations from the Soviet era. Stalin seem to cause a environment where smiling in public raised suspicion and even though life has changed there... old habits die hard

Posted by: AkMike

Left to right #2 and #4 are the newbies to the group. #2 is the russian that was ragging on Ukraine.
Tanya says the reason that "the they aren't smiling is that they don't have such a wonderful husbands".

Her words not mine!

#3's husband might have gotten his nose out of joint when she brought home the rose I gave her. He said that she doesn't need any gifts for m
Mothers Day now. He's about 65, she's 38 or so. And he snagged her after just a one week visit then the K-1..

Hey, I have to explain something now. I have a very good friend, his name is Igor. I've known him about 25 years, but about 10 years ago we lost contact with each other when he moved to Germany. A year ago he found me in Skype accidently.
I posted the picture of me and girls on Women's day party.
He was working a little bit on this picture and now we have the man of the year! :-)
Maybe this will explain why some of them are'nt looking happy...
