Is there a price difference if you buy tickets 1 month early? 2 months? 6 months?
I know they gouge big time if you buy and fly right away but I wonder about savings for way early purchases?

When I got back from Ukraine in October I immediately bought tickets for my return at Christmas, I looed at the prices in November and early December for the same dates abnd they had doubled in price.

When I got back from Ukraine 9th January I looked at prices and I have just looked at them now and they are about the same.

It depends on lots of factors, and who you are flying with and where to of course.

Usualy but not always. I bought tickets last August about 10 days before my flight and they were cheaper because the plane wasn't filling up.

Also try different places, on line and travel agents. Sometimes a travel agent can get them cheaper then on-line. My experience has 50-50 so checking both is advised.

Usually, there really isn't any difference in price, once you get 30 days out.
So it doesn't matter that if it's one month out, or three months out.

At certain airports in the UK and Germany, you can buy some cheap last minute deals---even including hotels.....yes it does exist. Problem is, effectively, it's just touristy, warm-weather destinations--such as Thailand, Cuba, Malta, Turkey, Egypt, etc.......NO Ukraine or Russia.

But I do look to see what they've got, anytime I'm in Munich or whever, just out of general principle.

And, Mike, since living in AK, thought I'd mention is sometimes the hard part may be getting to the US mainland. Flights this winter have been generally fuller than normal.

There is a new option with Alaska now flying ANC-Honolulu. I'm not sure if it does connect with Delta's HNL-Atlanta, or if having a stopover in Hawaii would help. But will check on the options soon.

We just returned from Vegas. I was surprised how full the planes were southbound.. Normally they're always full northbound. But for some reason southbound is normally 80%. We tried USAir... Not the worst but close.. I was surprised they charged $7 for a sandwich.. And when they got back to us all the sandwiches were gone and a 'wannabe' salad remained. I will smuggle KFC next time..

Mike, most US carriers are charging for food, on flights five hours or less.

Hmmm Maybe I need to get out more.. ????
It was in the 5 hr range.. from Vegas to Anch. nonstop.. It's the first time I've encountered it.
Ak Air usually will pass out a spamwich during the sea-anc flight.

Hey Raspberry,
Is there really any difference in price if you travel mid week? Which days? I've heard that weds. and thurs. are the best priced days. Fact or fiction????

Posted by: GentleGiant

Tuesday and Wednesday are the days normally, very, very much cheaper than Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays.
Do a flight search using Opodo or another flight search engine, and compare the prices, more than 50% difference sometimes.
The flight I took to Dubai would have been Ј800-Ј900 at the weekend, but was posted originally at Ј550 and then dropped to Ј295 ( for a Tuesday evening flight ).

I get the same price on one website no matter the dates. It shows $683 RT from Seattle to Amsterdam to Kiev via Uk Intl/NW/KLM but it never appears when I call. LOL, scam???
But the next price always is available and that show's $1053 Seattle to Copenhagen to Kiev via SAS. Not a bad price at all!

I do wish I could travel during the summer months via Condor. They have a direct non-stop flight from Anchorage over the top of the north pole to Frankfurt (IIRC) That would cut many hours offf our flight time. And is alot cheaper! I don't know if they stack `em in like a cattle car or not though.

Not really a scam, but more of a capacity control thing. The tickets may actually be had, but they limit them to just a low number. Same would apply to frequent flyer tickets......they may allow maybe twelve seats on the freebies, at most.

Can you imagine if eveyone decided to cash in their miles for Hawaii on the week of Thanksgiving? None of the airlines would take in any money that week, in fact, would lose money, if they did. So many people book way ahead on key holidays.

Yes, it is cheaper to fly during the middle of the week. But I would also mention that Saturdays---which usually is cheap on domestic--is more expensive and/or not available on International. Asia and Europe alike--if you need to be back to work Monday, you have to leave Saturday, NOT Sunday.

I don't know about Condor's long-haul flights, but I do know they really cram a lot of people on their Mediterranean trips from Germany.
