Vladivostok?

Has anyone to Vladivostok? I've been talking to a woman from Khabarovsk which is north of Vladivostok. Things are progressing to the point where I'm starting to contemplate going to meet her. I've been to Moscow and it was relatively easy. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who can give me some insight into what is involved with this trip. I've checked on airfare and see that there's quite a few stops involved, but aside from that, I'm wondering how English friendly this town is? Are there any travel agencies or people there who anyone here can recommended to help with details?

Thanks very much.

Do you know where I can get this book? A search on Amazon yielded no results.

Yes it is a long flight. This is the cheapest I could find, leave on a Monday and return on a Tuesday, http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll?tovr=-1294657289.

You might want to check with a travel agent, they are usually cheaper. You will also need a visa and don't forget to register your passport with the police station or if you're staying at a hotel, they can usually register your passport for you.

You should also register your passport with the US Embassy and call your credit card people and tell them you will be using your credit card in Europe.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I've been to Russia once before and stayed for a month. I went to Moscow and Yoshkar-Ola. I know about the visa process and registering when you arrive. Personally, I had no trouble whatsoever. I was stopped in YO and questioned by the police as we were leaving a pub one night, but I let the lady do the talking and 1,000 rubles later everything was fine.

I had a travel agency which was local to Yoshkar-Ola which made everything go very smoothly. I was wondering if someone on here had been to Vladivostok and could recommend a local travel agency, or had some advice for hotels, transfers, ect?

That's too bad, it looks like a very interesting read.

You might look at the Lonely Planet Guide to Russia, Ukraine and Belarus - it has about forty pages covering Vladivostok and Far Eastern Russia.

I've been invited out there for the summer, so if I do go I will write a trip report.

I am planning on going, but finances are very tight.

(for those of you who know what I am supposed to be doing right now, my excuse is my brain has melted!! I will carry on in the morning)

GG, where do you plan to go this summer?

I have been invited to Vladivostok by a teenie-bopper I met in Moscow two years ago, staying at her parents house.
Right now I am looking at flying a zig zag out there; stopping to meet a few women on the way, and then take the train back to Moscow; or the other way round, still not sure which, and staying in country 5-6 weeks in total if I can manage it.
I am concerned about the costs for the train though, the only published prices I have found are 5 years old and the only quote I have got from a UK based company were 3 times as much, making it far cheaper to fly!!

GG I looked at doing this once and I was told the train from Vladivostok to Moscow takes about 11 days, if this is correct have you the time to spend on it??

There are different services, the slowest takes 9-11 days and the fastest 5 1/2 days.

I am hoping that Katja will be travelling home about that time as well and have asked if she would like to take the train with me; so we can get to know each other a little better without her mother scowling at me. If she cant, I will fly the zig zag out and take the train home; it is supposed to be an interesting journey and allows me to stop off and see a few people on the way ( like JamesB's sister in law perhaps).

About 2/3rd of my essays, done; I am suffering from brain ache again, so having some lunch and a play before I continue.
