Buying her a computer

Hello,

Some of you have mentioned that you have purchased a computer for the woman you're corresponding to. I don't remember if they've all been met in person, or none, or what. But anyone worry that this girl who may only be associated with one agency, may use the internet now to broaden her search?
I thought maybe some would like to share the experiences or thoughts? I did correspond to one from AFA. A university student who claimed she didn't have much access to the internet at the time. After months our correspondence dwindled, maybe every 2 weeks, then I noticed her on LL! I wrote her twice on LL and she didn't respond. Then on AFA she explained she never received any LL letters from me. Well, this is getting to a whole different story. But now apparently, she's one of the top friends on LL!

Anyway, anyone have any experiences with this situation that may occur?

To be honest i would think that buying a computer or any thing of value for a rw that you had not met would be pretty foolish.

Until meeting her at least once and being sure of some kind of real connection i would leave that idea alone.

Well I only bought my fiancee a computer after she agreed to a committed relationship and a fiancee visa. I was spending $200 - $300 a month on phone bills. The computer paid for itself in about 3 months. She has been using it for 8 months now and after she arrives, her son will use it to communicate with us in the "States" util he arrives for a student visa this summer. It was the best thng I ever did ... except finding Larisa!!!

Buying a computer is risky. As you say she could use it to find a different guy. But life is a risk and when I spend money on a relationship, I concider it gone and I will not get in back ... in dollars.

Life's a risk, if you don't take risks ... you don't have a life!

I've told one lady I am writing to I will send her an old 2nd hand computer, so she can write to me direct; currently she is writing through Cindy Agency and it is costing me a fortune; even if she turns out not to be the one, the cost of the postage ( the PC is effectively free to me), will easily offset the charges from the agency.

A 2nd hand PC of about 1+ Ghz can be bought at a PC fair for Ј20-30, get her to buy a monitor because they are fragile and dont ship well, and a local keyboard, load the PC with Micro$hit software and an old copy of ME and away you go.
The one I am sending has a P3 933Mhz Processor, 512Meg of RAM,40 GIG hard drive, DVD drive, Matrox graphics card and an old Creative Labs sound card, an ethernet card and a 56k modem card.
It cost me Ј28 two years ago and came with Win2000 and license.

She has a PC and thinks you are really generous even though she paid more for the monitor than you did to buy AND ship the thing.
You can write to her and get replies without paying an agency or waiting days, and if you include Skype you can call her and the only cost is her dial up fee.

I can see people using pc's in this way for skype and such; if it's just for emails, there are plenty of internet cafes in Russia, so no need to buy.

I agree, cafe's are everywhere. Get the commitment first before spending the money. Even if the comp is free, the shipping is not cheap unless you ship it snail mail then you take a big chance on it not making it there at all. I shipped a small package FedEx to Omsk for Christmas and it cost $200 and only weighed 4.5lbs, I can imagine what a comp would cost to ship.

If you've never met this gal face to face... you broke the #1 rule! Never send $$$ (or computers) to someone you've never met.

We've been writing for 6 months and she says there is no cafe anywhere near her.
I have her address and phone number, I text her a little, but she doesnt read English and getting Cyrillic onto my phone has not been possible until recently.

As you say it cost you very little so you have little to loose if it the relationship goes tits up.

You've been writing for six months via an expensive service and not meet her yet, get over there as soon as you can, no excuses, would be my advice.

Hi,

I'd not think Cyrillic would be a barrier - all the Russians I know well enough have been able to read Latinized Russian. I thought that was pretty much widespread?

My wife has swapped texts with her non-English-speaking friends and family in Belarus using transliterated Russian, so that's my understanding too. They use a non-standard transliteration which looks more like Polish.

I tried transliterate and she understand some of it, but complained the last one she couldnt read.
As for visiting, I have very little time to go and even less money. I had a choice of visiting her or Tahmina, and T speaks very good English, so I thought I knew her better....
So... I was wrong, I will visit this other woman during the Summer at the latest; on my way to Vladivostok; however, if I have a win on the lottery I will go at Easter; that being the earliest time I can go unless the lottery win is in the millions!!
