Playing Russian DVD on Computer

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I realize that there are differences between the DVDs made abroad, and ones that are made in the US. I do not have a DVD player, but I do play DVDs on the computer. Just wondering if there is a program I can add, so I can play the videos from Russia(and other countries)?

Why dont you just log on to bestrussiantv.com and watch all the programs live?

It played a little "choppy" on my PC. Maybe because it was a free preview. I noticed it is pay TV. Any idea how much this costs? My fiancee wants to watch Russian TV when she arrives.

The only difference between DVDs as far as a PC is concerned is the regional coding. You can set most PC DVD players to Region "0" and play most DVDs.
If this does not work you can change it to the needed region and back a few times before the player will not accept any further changes; but there are software hacks to get around and/or reset this.
A PC's display is not affected by PAL or NTSC picture formats, I regularly watch downloaded films in PAL, NTSC, NTSC2, and SECAM without problems.

I hope this helps

If you did own a DVD player

do a search for "unlock" and add the name of your DVD player

for sure you will find a code that you input onto your DVD players remote control and hey presto a player that plays any DVD

=o)

GentleGiant has it right on PC, except you should not have to make a changes. My mother has cousin in Scotland who regularly sends her DVDs and they play just fine on her computer.
I have able to play PAL DVDs on an Insignia portable DVD I bought in Michigan and a year and half ago. During the summer my friend in Moscow bought several DVDs and gave them to me as presents. I was too embarassed to tell her that I don't they would play on my DVD player (I have computer with a DVD player but use it for my business). When I returned home I thought Iwould try the playing DVD in that machine and they worked perfectly. I also bought a several DVDs of Moscow and Kyiv (and forgot to check to make sure they were NSTC) and they too played perfectly in that player.

If the DVDs are home-made or, shall we say, less than official, they will most likely be region 0 and play fine on any player. My ancient Samsung 709 also plays NTSC discs without any trouble so I would expect all players these days to be able to do PAL/NTSC conversion.
