March 8 - Woman's Day

Hi everyone,

I read here online that March 8 is celebrated as "Woman's Day" in Russia. It is apparently customary for women to receive gifts on that day, but I'm not sure if it's a major gift-giving holiday.

I am traveling to Latvia on March 5 to meet my sweetie Elena for the first time. I'd like to think I'll score some points if I present her with a gift on the holiday :-)

I was wondering if the men here in this forum give their girl friends/wives gifts on that day? If so, what types of gifts have you given in the past or are planning to give this year?

Yes. Do not ignore this day, especially with a new, potential sweetheart. If you do marry her, she will remind you for the rest of your life that you "forgot" to give her something.

The gifts you typically associate with Valentine's Day are most appropriate -- flowers (odd numbers), chocolate, perfume all make good gifts.

Since you are just meeting her for the first time, don't go overboard. You want her to be happy that you thought of her and gave her a gift. You don't want to insult her, and have her think you are trying to buy her affection. Roses are not cheap in the FSU, especially compared to the wages people earn. A rose with some other flowers and a small box of chocolates, or a bouquet of three roses, is a good starting point.

I am a believer that it's better to give three roses 5 times, than to give 15 roses once. Later in the relationship, if you give her 3 roses (and you gave her 15 before), be prepared to hear the question, "...Why don't you love me as much as you did before?..."

VERY, VERY important! (I wonder if this day over rides a birthday?)

A birthday requires flowers and a gift. March 8 requires flowers and a dinner/chocolate box/some candies or whatever else you can afford.

Lots of young couples do pretty well with roses. That's like 10% of a usual monthly salary, so it's a big gift in fact.

Thanks for confirming my comment I made a few posts up from your, Andrei. It's a WM thing, where we have been beaten over the head so many times by the media and marketing types that we must go overboard, and buy the biggest and most expensive expression of our "love".

Hello Spamer and everybody else!
Inna is to receive 11 roses on Friday and if I ever miss this one in our future relationship--I will be forever in the doghouse! Rockingsailors occasionally go overboard and I know from experience! Not a fun one! However I know she will be pleased and now at least, I am not in the doghouse, at least with her! You guys are probably ready for a field day, however! Ok, bring it on!

Yes everyone is correct in how important this holiday is to your lady. I got hints from my woman for over a month. She recieved her flowers today with a nice poem. I have sent her flowers for birthday, christmas, valentine's and now women day. She looks happy about receiving the flowers from the pictures I get back from the agency. I think I like getting the pictures back a little better than actually sending the flowers.

Can someone who has used them please email me a recommendation for a photo/flower company?

Thanks, from myself as well as from the Ukraine.
