hi all,

anyone have any experience dealing with an apartment service called "odessa rent a flat" and a guy named matt mccarthy?

Yes actually...I rented my apartment from him when I was in Odessa.
I was only there a few days but he was helpful. They pick you up at the airport for free which is nice because you get a bunch of people in your face asking you if you want a room or taxi the second you go through the door.

I had a few issues with my apartment even though it was nice.
1.) No Internet rooms were available so I had to go down the street for that.
2.) The phone wasn't working.
3.) I didn't find the bed all that comfortable...maybe I am spoiled by my Sealy.
4.) Dogs barking all night...You might need some earplugs.

The good thing about my apartment was the is was close to everything, including restaurants and a little grocery store. It also had a coded door entrance just to get into the building.

I was in apartment #22 under the 1 bedroom apartments.

thanks az. i thought it was a shot in the dark to ask about this person, but looks like i got lucky.

can i ask, how much did you pay for a one bedroom apt and what time of year was it? thanks again.

I paid $80 US a night and I stayed there in mid-September although it was still summer weather.

I think I had eye strain the first time I ventured down Deribasovskaya.

Watch yourself crossing the street though, cars have the right away there.

There is no such thing as a comfortable bed in the FSU. They prefer to sleep on rocks. Great business idea...make high quality, really comfortable mattresses, and you would be rich.

I am throughly convinced the reason for the "Russian scowl" isn't because of the weather, politics, way of life, etc...it is because no one is getting a good nights sleep. If they only knew.

Hi PIN,
I stayed here and the beds were great. Electricity never shuts off and cold & hot water has a reserve. There is also a generator in case of electricity stops.

Ask for Masha. She works there and is very helpful.

I stayed there in April & I should have stayed there in the summer. But I didn't

thanks mike! that really made me laugh !

well it looks like i'm a go! i'd better get moving here to get myself organized...

Posted by: AkMike

Jeesh... How long does it take you to pack a bag????
You need to get alot more practice at packing a bag.. I can be ready for the airport in a couple of hours. Of course there are always loose ends that take forever..

geezz he does need a women to get him organised..lol

and yes, use the service in Odessa I put royalpalace onto .

We've both used their services and the people running it are Americans and both seemed like good guys and intent to give westerners some accomadation that is nearer to what we expect and hope for overseas. The hotels are apparently not up to scratch and cost even more...

hi everyone!

i stayed with odessarentaflat.com on my most recent trip to ukraine. the apartment was right in the center and the rate in the last week of december was $60 a night for a one bedroom with a VERY SMALL cooking area. the place had been remodeled so it was attractive and had very high ceilings. i have no idea what the price might be in the summer but it will be MUCH higher than $60. you can see all the apts on their website. some of them even have a computer with internet connection and satellite tv.

i stayed in apt #5 under one bedrooms.

the place i had was in a quiet courtyard in an alleyway type of street. dark walking into the courtyard. always bring a small flashlight to ukraine. they also make great gifts too for people you meet there.

a bedroom with a full size bed (thin mattress only), clothing wardrobe, small bedside table, and large windows. air conditioning unit also in the bedroom.

living area with comfortable fold out sofa. slept there instead of the too soft for me bed. coffee table, cable tv, dvd player and small stereo. attractive lighting on the walls and overhead ceiling lights also.

decent bathroom with shower. hot water and good pressure in the shower, but not good pressure in the sink. they only provide one bath towel and one hand towel. i should have insisted for more.

in this apt, the small cooking area is too cramped with the stove and sink a scant few inches apart. not a good set up at all. no counter space. a few cabinets that hang over the cooking area and i always felt like i was going to crack my head on one of them when i was cooking or washing things in the sink. there is a microwave that sits on top of a small counter/cabinet in which the fridge is encased. there's also a toaster, coffee maker, tea kettle, small fridge with tiny freezer space, and an attractive dinette table and two nice chairs. no dish towels was a negative. also there was one large bread slicing type knife but no small steak type knives for cutting. i borrowed one from the apt of another guy i met and left it in the place i stayed.

the apt manager is a great and beautiful (of course) 20 something woman named ella. very helpful, but needed to be reminded one or two times about small requests i made that she had forgotten about. but i find that ukrainians often forget things you tell them and expect they would remember. she did go out of her way to show me some language schools where i was interested in applying for summer teaching jobs. she showed me quite a few schools i didn't find on an internet search and walked me to them as she was not so busy all the time in this season. she didn't have to do this so i was very grateful and glad.

this agency is owned by an irishman whom i did not meet. they have about 20 apartments, but only the manager ella and one cleaning woman.

my concern is that the manager (and the cleaning woman) will be overwhelmed in the summer trying to do it all which includes meeting clients at the airport and trying to get them into their apartments and oriented. the manager said she began working for the agency oct. 1st and the agency is in business about 3-4 years. i did see quite a few ads around town for this agency.

having such a skeletal staff to me this is a genuine concern for first timers who may need a little extra hand holding and a more available person than just one manager trying to manage so many units. such a newbie person might be better in a hotel. but if you're a veteran and know your way around the city this is a good rental agency to use and you'll like the friendliness and personality of the manager.
