You're young??? Invest the money!!! Now is a great time!!! Even CDs or money markets are better and pactically as safe as a bank account. I've never heard anyone lose money in CDs or money markets.

A bank account pays .5%, a CD will pay 5%!!! BIG difference. Good luck and invest my friend.

The Aval Bank in Ukraine pays 8% on a simple savings account too. If you get over there look into it.

Posted by: dagpop

G, why don't you put your money in the bank and tell L she can't come over until you get enough money from interest to buy her plane ticket.

Chris,
This is the bank that a lawyer friend of ours works at. It is one of the largest in Ukraine with LOTS'A assests. ( Some cute tellers too) Because of this I felt secure to invest in them.
I set up an account there for the transfer of funds to buy the apts. in Kiev.
I even was treated like a VIP!
When I was there it seemed like the larger the bank the less interest they pay but it would seem that the money was more secure because of the size.
The bank ads showed most paying between 8% and 13% on savings at that time. The new rates shown on the website you found shows better!

Yes the rates are good from what I have seen, my lady is a chief accountant at a couple of companies and they have a branch in her city, she carries out a lot of negotiations on behalf of some companies with the banks so she will know them, I will ask her advice.

Do you have to be a resident to use them or have a physical address in Ukraine do you know?

Posted by: GentleGiant

Much lower rates for Euros. looks to me that they are banking on the dollar falling even more. Could be a problem if it rallys. ^ not a deliberate pun, honest!!

I don't recall if I used Tanya's apt address or mine here.. I think I used my Alaska address. You do not need to be Ukrainian to have an account.
I don't have very much in my account now. I just basicly opened it up tp use for money tranfer when I bought the apt. in Kiev. But I think I'll try to get some more in the account before I go there in April.

The interest they pay is doing better than my stock broker account here.

Posted by: Chrismc

Thanks Mike I might have a better look at that one. Plus I am going over there in 3 weeks so it may be worth a visit too open an account.

Posted by: AkMike

Now keep in mind that other banks were paying more interest when I set this up. The larger the bank the less they pay. The smaller / newer banks were advertizing up to 13% at that time IMO to get the new business.. This bank was paying 8%... I tend to be consertive and want stability in my banking so I chose this one.

Posted by: AkMike

Chris, One of Tanya's childhood friends and one of her closest is a lawyer for that bank and he assures us that it is very stabile. I have no reason to doubt him.
Here we have insurance on every account up to 100K incase the bank fails..I guess you have something similar?.. There isn't that saftey net there from what I gather.

What kind of interest rates are the banks in England paying? I'm getting 2.85% here.

Posted by: GoingToRussia

WHOA ... maybe we need to start a thread about investing in the FSU!!!

My advise is you are going about this in the right way Jerolin. If you're not ready to spend the bucks and make many sacrifics ... don't start this process. It is hard on the wallet, mental health, and physical health.

It takes about 8 months to get a visa these days. This is from the date you mail your visa documentation.

Good luck!!!

Can you open an account by mail or do you have to apply in person?

Posted by: AkMike

Lot'sa paperwork to be signed.. I doubt that you can do it by mail. And it's all in Ukrainian.. Bring a TRUSTED translator.
Sooo Sorry for the thread Hijack Jerolin~!

Mike you out go online for your banking. ingdirect is paying 4.2 and etrade is 5.05%.

I'm getting 5.2%(was 5.5% but just recently dropped) from internet branch of Zions Bank in Salt Lake City. This is a Money Market Checking which allows 6 withdrawels per month.

I don't believe I could be confident in a Ukrainian or Russian Bank.

How did this thread go from talking about dating services to interest rates at Ukrainian and Russian banks?

Yes we get about the same, you can get up to 4% less tax on some accounts and I have one that pays 8% less tax but oyu have to put in something every month for min of two years. You do have instant access to the funds though.

But 8%+ as in the Ukrainian bank is unheard of, unless you tie your funds up forever

Can someone split all this banking stuff off and make a new thread out of it. Seems there are a few here who have an interst in this stuff.

Thanks
Chris

Thanks Mike for the info, I am going to look into all this when I am there in a few weeks, I will ask my lady to check up on things for me too, there is a branch in her city.

OH OH!!! Seems I split the wrong posts. Sorry Jerolin, I will see if I can fix.

Update from my lady Mike/guys

In her words:

It's good and big bank and it's more than 15 years in Ukraine - it was one of the first. My dad has there some deposits. Well dear I can tell you much more in the evening it's just hard to explain all in a letter. This bank is more secure than a lot of another Ukrainian banks but dear probably is not so secure like English banks. We have such law that if something will happen with bank then our government guarantees only
20,000 grivnas for every deposit all another money depends on bank but about 2 years ago it was bought out by Raiffeisen group. If I am correct that is Swedish group so may be they add some extra guarantees but I don't know about that but can find out.

So it sounds to pretty stable and is now owned by Raiffeisen International Bank-Holding AG (I think they are actually Austrian?)

They are based in Vienna Austria.

My lady has just told me she has a friend who put $10,000 in Ukrsotsbank tied up for 12 months and she is getting 13.3% but she thinks the Aval Bank is safer.

She is going to do some research for me.

Don't use the
Privatbank bank though, they dropped the interest rate from 14% down to 4% overnight without telling anyone and NO notice period.

Thanks Mike.

I have a friend who grew up in the Ukraine so she can do the translating for me right here in the US. Many banks around the world allow US citizens to open accounts via mail so I think I will check with a couple of Ukranian banks directly and see if they do such a thing.

Posted by: Chrismc

A bit more for us:-

I am told Ukrsots and Ukrsib are good banks too, but Ukrsotsbank only hold deposits for people with a Ukrainian address.

The Aval Bank are calling my lady back today to see what the score is with them and addresses etc.

Posted by: AkMike

I think I used Tanya's local address in Cherkassy. But there is a paper trail to me here because I did a bank to bank wire trasnfer to Aval Bank. Maybe you could use your lady's address or her parents address if it's needed. ( Just don'tget them pissed off at you! )
