Oh, I think it is a great movie. My husband and i have watched it over and over. You laugh the first half of the movie and cry the whole second half. (literally).
I recommend you view it at least one time. I think that Cheburashka posted a thread a while ago about this movie.
PS: raspberry, did you see my post about Nemiroff Gorilka, it was directed to you.

Well, The Wongs has given me a copy of this movie, he and I had a couple of bottles of best Russian vodka one night a few weeks ago and started to watch it around 2am, needless to say, we didn't see the end of it, so I now have a copy which I am taking to Ukraine with me to watch with my lady over Christmas, along with some others.

From what I remember it was a good movie, certainly the first hour anyway, the rest I can comment on in the New year, hopefully

Basically it is about a young Jewish American who flies to the Ukraine in search of his grandfather's past. He has a photograph and the name of a village. He hires the Odessa Heritage Tours, made up of a gruff old man and his English-speaking grandson. The three, plus grandfather's deranged dog, travel in an old car from Odessa into Ukraine's heart. Jonathan, the American, is a collector, putting things he finds into small plastic bags, so he will remember. Alex, the interpreter, is an archetypal wild and crazy guy. Alex asks the old man, "Was there anti-Semitism in the Ukraine before the war?" Will they find the village? The past illuminates everything!

Thanks for the update, Chris...

Good movie. Not what you would expect. And I didn't think it was offensive to Ukrainians or Americans.
