Hey fellas,
I'm traveling to Chisinau at the end of December to visit a girl. Do you guys have any suggestions on hotels? GTR, I read where you stayed at the Dacia Hotel. Would you stay there again? What about Marisha's apartment? Has anyone stayed there? Thanks for any help!
Brian

Hi Brian. Dacia Hotel was well worth the money, $100 a day, great restauraunt, buffet breakfast included, nice be but small bath, close to restaurants and center of city, easy to get a taxi.

I would definetly stay again. Don't have your laundry done, too expenseive. Buy bottled water at store and bing it back to room. They also have machine to withdraw money using a credit or debt card. They charge $10 though so withdraw the max.

Good luck and say hello to Chisinau for me!!!

Hey GTR.. What about SIM cards? Are they readily available from street vendors or wireless stores? You also wrote about Hotel Dacia having a curfew.. What's up w/ that? Is this standard and something I should enquire a/b before I book w/ a hotel?
Thanks,
B

I couldn't tell you about sims cards because I was with my girl most of the time. I really didn't need one but I'm sure they are easy to get. I'll ask my girl today.

Yes about the curfew but it is for guests not for people staying at the hotel. You can go out on the town and return at any time. They are open 24/7! I'm not sure how the other hotels operate but yes I would ask if it would cramp your style.

They have a very small bar, more like a liquior store and a restaurant in the basement.

It's in a good part of town and probably safe. From what I hear, the police are more crooked then the people. I heard women walking the streets at 1 AM ... no they weren't "advertizing!

Ha Ha.. Ok.. Thanks!!

I talked to her son Slava. He said they sell sim cards at places where they sell cigarettes. If I remember correctly, you can see a cigarette place when standing outside the Dacia hotel.

There is also a "sweet young thang" at the front desk! Worth checking out! I've been to a few European cities and I must say Chisinau had the most beautiful women overall.

So Brian, are you meeting a girl over there or is this trip just for pleasure ... I'm not sure what the difference is!

Take the winery tour if possible, it was closed when I went. Also the 2 restaurants I liked best was the Symposium and Beer Mania.

Take care, have a good flight, and let me know how you liked Chisinau.

Thanks GTR!
I'm traveling to Chisinau to meet a girl. Go figure I do hope to take a tour of one of the wineries. I will also be there for New Year's. The girl I'm going to see says that it is always a good time in the town center for New Year's. I'm looking forward to it.
Thanks again for the help!

Okay Brian, I'd give my fiancee's number in case you run into a problem but she should be on her wayto me or with me before then. Take care, have fun, and say hello to Chisinau for me!

Have a safe flight and Happy Landings!!!

Hey GTR,
What have your experiences been with customs at Chisinau airport?
How long did it take to go through? Do they have lines seperating people who want to claim items from those who don't?
I read where you hit a snag with your girlfriends sons' visa. I know how you must feel; I'm sure it is very frustrating. I hope that you will be able to work around this easily and get him here soon also.
Brian

The Chisinau airport is small so lines and the amount of time you spend in them is basically zero. What took the longest was waiting for your luggage.

I don't remember any lines for declaring or not declaring items. I don't even remember filling out paper on the plane or in the terminal. I did have to register my passport with police though.

You should be leaving soon yes? Good luck, I know you will enjoy the city.

Hi Brian,

Not long now until you catch that "silver bird" to Moldova!!!

If you notice my avitar, it is a picture of myself and fiancee in front of the Stephen The Great statue in Chisinau. This is a national monument and it is a good idea to have a photo taken in front of this statue. It is for immigration purposes, a photo together at a landmark proves you met in her country.

Have fun in Chisinau and have a safe flight! I wish I was going with you.

Posted by: brian92

Hey GTR,
Yes, I recognize the statue from other pictures I have seen while doing my homework on Chisinau. That's good advise about taking a pictures w/ landmarks!
Thanks for the well wishes!
Brian

Brian, are you in Chisinau? Can't get much closer to the end of December then now!

Hope you have some salanka at the Dacia hotel ... best I ever ate!!!

Hello GTR and everybody else,
I'm back from Chisinau. I had a good time and I met the girl I was speaking to. She is a really nice so we'll see what happens.
It was cold but not too cold. We spent New Year's eve together and I was impressed with the celebration in Chisinau. The fireworks were almost at the level of a fireworks display here in the States. There also was a big stage set up that featured different musical performers. It seems there is a new cellular carrier in Chisinau that sponsored the whole event in town center.
She also showed me the WWII memorial and other cathedrals and monasteries. We also went to the New Year's performance of the symphony in the Organ House (this was really nice).
I also met her parents; they were really nice people and seemed to be glad to have me there.
No problems with the cops. No other problems to speak of either. She speaks good English. It was of course a great help to have her show me around and translate for me.
I stayed at an apartment rented through a management company called "Adresa". I would recommend them to anyone that is considering traveling to Chisinau.
GTR, we did walk past the Hotel Dacia, it seemed nice too. But, the apartment was closer to where she lived and also near many restaurants, markets, and other things to do.
If anyone has any questions, I'll be glad to share my experiences.

Hi Bry, glad to hear everything went well and enjoyed your time in Chisinau Moldova. I really like this city and the people. I also felt very safe and enjoyed seeing the sites.

So did you go to any restaurants? They make some great food there. I really learned to love salanka there.

So any plans to return?

Good to have you back safely but I'm sure you wish you were with her now.

Take care ... the waiting begins!

wow

Very interesting tread. I never encountered a moldavian tread anywhere before.

Brian92, my wifes unclae was married to Moldavian woman. He says its the best wifes in the world.

can I ask both of you, did you experienced anything about the Trans-Dniester republic? The Leader got this fabulous name: Igor Smirnov.

Can anyone of you compared it to Russia?

thx, Jutman.
sorry for the Q. You know I teach international economics, so its sooo interesting for me.

Moldova is more like a European country then a Russian country although most people are loyal to Russia or Romania.

Everywhere I went in Chisinau Moldova (the capital) they accpeted credit cards, debit cards, US Dollars, and some accepted travellers checks. I found very few places in Russia that did this and none that accepted debit cards or checks.

The Trans-Dneister area is off limits for me. I was told it is not a safe place to be. Russia has armed foces there and most people and the president what Russia to leave.

Moldova was probably my favorite country to visit of the FSU, Russia the worst.

Hi Brian, how are things going?

Posted by: brian92

Hey G,
Things are going good. Still waiting for the NOA2 and not expecting it until sometime in August. I really miss her, but we both have many things to get into order before she comes here. I just read a few posts about your wedding. Congratulations! It sounds like everything went great! I hope Larisa is adjusting well.

I also read where many folks are traveling east this summer. Is anyone on the forum going to Moldova this summer? I'm not an expert on Moldova, but I could give a few pointers on getting around in Chisinau or the women in general.

Posted by: GoingToRussia

Hi Brian, good to hear you're progressing nicely with the visa.

Thanks for the congrats, everything is going better then expected and I have no complaints. The wedding was great but I wish I had more time to explore Vegas.

She has a 30 year old friend looking for a foreign man. She has 1 of those personallities that makes you smile when you speak! Full of life, smart, enthusiastic, and of slim and course attractive. Anyone outv there interested?
