Some girl from Omsk has been writing me the past few days. I have no clue what this city is all about.

I presume that some of you guys have been to Omsk. What's there, and what time zone is it is(if I do decide to call the girl)? And how is the ground transportation situation?(i.e., trains from other cities)?

Omsk is +14 hours from Washington.

Great site for helping to keep time zones correct.

Omsk is about 1400 miles East of Moscow, middle of Siberia. You would need to fly from Moscow to Omsk. 3 hour flight.

Brrrrrrrr! Sounds cold!

First Russian lady I ever met was from a village near Omsk. Luckily, I met her in Ireland. She told me about the -45c winters and I didn't have to see/feel them. I'm cold writing about it!

Having siad all that.. If you have Google Earth installed, there's some good pictures that make it quite interesting. I'd like to visit... During the summer months of course. I don't do cold! Brrrrrr!

Noooooo! I really, really hope Larisa gets her visa! I hate to think about being in Kerch in December - January! At the moment, the low is about 1c, but it drops fast in December. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I must look at the bright side. At least I'l have something to keep me warm.

That's not exactly what I had in mind, but I'm sure I'll have a few if I go over there! The cognac is good for keeping the temperature up too!

there was an interesting story a few winters back about a beer truck falling through river ice in Omsk (it's common for vehicles to cross the river like this) and the residents pitching in to rescue the truck

I bet they did!

What about from Yekaterinburg? I know that is a bit closer. Is there train service between the cities?

Posted by: EasyTarget

900 miles due east from Moscow. Train takes 1 day 2 hours from Moscow to Yekaterinburg. 2nd class tickets are about $100 each way. 2 hour flight from Moscow to Yekaterinburg.

+13 hours from Washington

Yep, that's a Russian city. Can't mistake that tall gray skyline for anywhere else.

When I was in Moldova, I noticed they knocked down most of the gray cement apartment buildings and made more unique and colorful buildings. A nice change. I always thought those gray buiding were depressing.
