I received this e-mail recently. The scary part is that he called my cell phone "which is a new number." He had my work address as well. Anybody else get any e-mails like this. Just curious.

Your information have been recieved, I will like to inform you that your compensation funds has been lodged in a Diplomatic firm in America by me on your behalf for safe keeping, until final confirmation is conlcuded, as i have been assigned to assist you in getting your funds across to you.

I have contacted the firm in America for the past couple days and they confirm to me their readiness to deliver this funds to you upon your agreement and endorsement to follow protocol and procedures needed in this regards, an Agent by name Mr. Ray Ferdinard will fly with the funds in Cash through diplomatic means to deliver the package to you and they have agreed to come in through JFK International Airport just to make everything work out as planned, wherby the agent will call you upon his safe arrival into JFK and immediately after clearance from the customs he will re-connect his flight heading your destination with your given address that you have provided for onward delivery of the Package.

All original hard copy of the document will be handed over to the agent as soon as they get confirmation that you are ready to work with them before they board with the Airline.

A Power of Authorization signed by me will be sent to the firm on your behalf to enable them make a change of ownership to your name as the new bonafide beneficiary of the said funds in their custody, they have requested you to send either of your identification (International Passport or Driver's Licience) for proper identity, so perior the arrival of the agent into JFK he will know whom is will be making his delivery too for security reason as you know the volume of funds involve.

variation of the Nigerian scam? If they did have your mobile number, I would be curious how they got it

1 is this mobile number published online (EG professional or home pages)?
2 did you ever send it via email?

#1 a spider can easily harvest such information
#2 although more uncommon these days, a virus or malware might actually parse your or someone else's inbox seeking leads...I received spam to a business account I never use nor publish...obviously it had been "harvested" through my contacts' inbox, as i run plenty of antispyware etc software.

That's what I was thinking. I've had those emails talking of how I inherited someone's fortune or some similar ploy but them having your cell number is kinda freaky.

I'd have to agree with Ham that there are ways of getting this information if you have ever posted it on the Internet in some fashion or through business. Or it could also fall under the computer virus catagory.
There are viruses out there that scan you email, steal your contact lists, etc. There are Trojans which open a back door in your PC and allow people to place Keyloggers that log specific information and then forwards it to a hackers website.

Make sure you have up to date virus protection to rule out any of the computer virus scenarios.

This is a more elaborate scam but a scam nonetheless .

What scared me is the possibility of a rogue telemarketer, or accounnts payable clerk that works/worked for one of my credit card companies. But if that were the case, I'm sure my balances would be through the roof before I had a strange call asking for identification.

Nope, never received an e-mail like this.

Everything about this sounds scary to me. Anyone that asked for your "INTERNATIONAL" passport can't be good.

I get at least 2 emails a week from some people who tell me they are the son or daughter of some millionaire who can't touch his money and if I help them get the money transfered I will get a piece of their fortune. I just ignore them & delete into trash.

Sounds like your guy just got lucky and got a few phone numbers to call to make it look real.

Don't even respond. You will set yourself up for something that's not good!

I have never had this and like you say it's a bit freaky that he has phoned your number. By any chance did your mobile phone manage to log a contact number? If not, then if by chance the guy phones again try and get a contact number from him. The more contact details you can obtain, the more you can give to police or appropriate people who may be able to investigate such scams and bust them.

My story...I remember when I got a phone call from some scam phone insurance company. The guy try to pressure me into taking out mobile phone insurance with the supposed company that he worked for. Straight away I knew something was not right, because I only had the phone for 3 days and had not given my number out to anyone. I kept delaying him on the occassions that I spoke to him and then would not answer he phone calls for a few days. After a week of this constant barrage of calls, I phoned the customer services dept of the nationwide shop that sold me the phone. I didn't complain, but I explained that some dodgy geezer was phoning me trying to sell me insurance and I felt that his 'setup' was probably not legit. I took advice from them and later passed them some contact details. I luckily got a landline number from him, after he orginally gave me a mobile number to contact. I explained to this man that I would be unable to do business with a company that only provides a mobile number for contact. Anyway, cutting this story brief (lol), if I remember correctly, the people involved using various company names got busted within a year.
