Perfume is always a good idea. The big western brands are known in FSU, and sell for western prices there, so this would be appreciated. Or maybe some non-romantic jewelry - a brooch or earrings?

It is difficult to find authenticly "American" handicrafts that will not look cheap.

Best wishes for your trip.

I could not think of a better idea than matching bracelets. I suggest those American flag charm bracelets you see at the kiosks in the shopping malls. They are very nice and well made. They will also satisfy the desire for American items, even if they are made in China or somewhere. I live in an army town and many of the military wives wear them. I have to say, they are pretty.
You could also look at overstock.com in the jewelry section.
They often have very nice strings of pearls at very reasonable prices. You never know what they may have there. I gave some pearls from that site to my mother for Christmas, and she absolutely adores them. I purchased an extra necklace for my trip to Russia this summer too.
good luck, sean.

Hi Sean,

Can never go wrong with a couple of cases of beer and carton of smokes

Seriously, the jewelry is a good idea, but be careful at customs. They ask if you have gifts and did search my bag on the way in. I had a very nice necklace for my GF but it was in my shoulder bag which they didn't ask me to open. When I went on my first trip (a tour) one guy had some jewelry for a girl he had been writing to and customs shook him down for $200 for some bogus tax they probably made up on the spot. Plus, and this is unfortunate, the guy is black and I think they singled him out for a shakedown. So I surmise you have been there before so try to remember your customs experience and take your chance from there. I always bring some Cuban cigars back.

Good Luck and Hearty Congratulations!!

(you know when you are a redneck when ............. )

Hey Spamer,

I resemble that remark!!! Not really, but it sure did sound like a red neck reply, especially if the beer is long neck Budweisers and the smokes are Marlboros

Spamer, how many rednecks do you know who smoke Cuban cigars and drink Corvosier? Aaahh, if I really drank it, I'd probably know how to spell it! I'll have to ask Tim Meadows on Saturday Night Live - aka "The Ladies Man"

Cuban cigars? I thought you said Cuban Sandwich.

Certainly everyone will feel a bit melancholy, including Sveta. But Mama and the family should also be happy, that she has found happiness and stability with a good man.

You just have to live up to your end of the bargain.

Hmmmm.....possibly something to be aware of or to keep in mind...

In the four trips I've taken into Moscow in the past year, I have only had my bags checked twice (run through an X-ray machine). And one of those times, I probably wouldn't of even been checked, but it was out of the ordinary, as Aeroflot lost one of my bags.

The other two times, I walked straight out through the Green Line. Once there was not even anyone there, the second time past a couple of workers just standing next to the X-ray machine.

Entering the US, I never have had a bag checked (or even X-rayed).

On every occasion I've had food, liqour, jewlery, computer equipment, and other things that I would figure they would ask about.

Best rule of thumb is to pack well, declare nothing, don't look too 'American' or tourist, and act like you have done this before.

I was stopped in SVO when leaving and all they ask me was, "did anybody touch your bags after you packed them?" They saw I brought 500.00 in and left with 40.00. Other than that, no problems.
I got the impression that the cop was bored and asking me this so he could say he was doing something.

That's the stock airline security question.

I never fill out the Customs form on the plane anymore. If you ever get forced into the Red Line, you will have plenty of time to fill it out to their liking, anyway. I'm not sure how you even got asked that question on the way out of the country at SVO.

Hey you forgot about packing me into your suitcase for her sister too..
